Default Last Tire Question, promise!

Since my method of Forced Induction has required me to upgrade my rims and tires, I though I should post this question to the FI guys. You would be the ones with the hands on knowledge.

I am minutes away from buying a new set of rims for R compound tires and need to know if I'm going to have any issues with the car's computer or anything...

Fronts 18x9.5 with 265/35/18 Nitto NT05

Rears 18x12.5 with 335/30/18 Nitto 555R

I wish I could run the same tire all around, but sizes are very limited.

Will this work?

run Mickey THompson's on the back with those 18' rims.. 345\35\18's.. IMO the best damn street tire available.. I love them..

also, why not run 275's in the front with those rims.. i do..

You have a stock C6 front end and are able to run 275's?

The MT's on the rear don't create any issues with handling? We don't have a 1/4 mile track in Hawaii, so turns are a must...

Thanks for the reply!

never tracked my car ever.. I guess I forget my front rim wideth, but I have stock "front" fenders and run 275 KDW's and could go a little bigger if I needed too.. the MT handle like a ****'r, ice and rain.. well not so much, but dry, I can say the car will turn harder than you will be willing to push it..

I ran the Mickey T's on my last C5, but they wear done fast and they don't have stiff sidewalls. I'm going to run toyo R888's(305/30/19) on the street, and 275/40 ET streets at the track.

I have a rear widebody kit, and R compound tire sizes are very limited. They don't make a tire wider than a 305.

So TrenAM, exactly what make/model tire are you running, front & rear?

Nitto makes an N05 drag radial that looks like a nice tire and that I can get in a 19". It was my understanding that the car wouldn't handle well with a rear set of drag radials.

I'm open to anything, as long as I can get traction. It's coming back to me with at least 750 WHP, and I need to make sure I can get decent traction and the car can still turn at high speed.

I see a 335 on Toyo's website in the R888.

I had R888's on the back. They were good at ~600 RW but at >700 RW they don't cut it. This is coupe fender size, 305/30/19. Now I have MT ET Street II's, 305/35/18 and they are much stickier. They do not handle well though as you'd expect. Very swimmy compared to the R888's (and I thought the handling suffered when I went from BFG KDW's to the R888's). Kind of a bummer because it's not really a "sports car" anymore unless I put my 19" wheels with the Toyos back on for twisty track days. But to be able to put down >700 RW you have to start making compromises. MT's or NT05R's seem to be the best ticket. NT05R's are popular with the wide body guys because of the sizes they are available in. I believe they come in 345/30/19?

SB, I have been in your shoes and had to ask a lot of ppl here prior to me pulling the trigger on going with 18 or 19' rim because I wanted the best street tire for the HP I was going to push. R888 is a great track tire but does not grip very well in comparison to MT's 345\35\18 and 345\30\19 NT05R's . I think both MT and NT's are very comparible but the edge goes to MT for 2 reasons, bigger side walls "35 series vs Nitto's 30 series" and they handle pretty good in rain. When I say they handle good in rain, I mean you will get home without sliding around everywhere going the speed limit.

SB,

The MT are waste of money if you want handling.. they suck a$$ ..your vette will handle like a broken shopping cart.. The best street/handling Drag radial is NT555R period! I tried them all and Nittos 555R are the best. They are very good in the rain and are not as sticky as the MT's bUT will handle the 750 for street use

My old vette was making 840rtq @ 4000rpms and they did fine from second gear in 70* +

Very true.

Just for reference, 555R's are the same compound as R888's. MT's are in a different class than these tires IMO.

So it looks like my OP above is safe then...

I'll probably stick with the 555r's to start off for pure handling, then switch to the NT05, or MT's if traction is still a major issue.

Though Hooking off the line traction would be nice, I'm more concerned with tire slippage once the RPM's wind up. It's kinda freaky when your tires let loose at 5500 rpm's in third during a WOT pull, or a down shift into boost from fifth to third. That was always a problem, and I know that it's just a matter of time before I lose it on the freeway and hurt someone.

Thank you guys VERY much for helping yet again... CF members are the best!

Oh, and Vegasredz... I loved your analogy of my car handling like a broken shopping cart... I got a nice chuckle out of that!

Merry Christmas to you guys!

Aren't the R888's the same as the 555RII's? I thought the 555R was an older compound.

FWIW, I selected the R888 335/30 18s because the tires used a newer/better compound, had more tread depth and were slightly wider than the 555Rs.

I thought the 555R's and RII's were the same too, just different sidewall on the RII's for road racing. Donno, I was going off of what Sam said a while back but I don't remember if it was the R or RII that he was referring to.

This has happened to me with the R888's on a cold night (that means mid to low 50's here in TX). It's a tough call, you'll probably end up trying different things so the R888's are a good starting point. At least you have 18's out back so you have more options.

Yes sir, but they do make MT's in the 345/35/18...

If the Nitto's or Toyo's don't work for me, I'll get into the MT DR's..

Thanks again!

Aren't the NT05R's Y rated and the R888's Z rated? Not sure if this is a real consideration when hitting top end? Although where you gonna hit top end...H2?
