Default Myth (or truth) about Meth

I read many differing threads about the value of meth for supercharged vettes. I've got a 2005 C6 with 402 stroker and a procharger D1 set-up. Have heads, cam, headers, etc along with a DeWitts rad.

I no longer run the car down the 1/4 mile, it is and has always been my DD. I live in Boca Raton, FL, so the summers are hot.

I was recently at a car show and it was strongly suggested that meth should be added as a standard practice on all supercharged vettes

So, here's my question, should I or shouldn't I add meth? What are the up-sides and what are the down-sides?

Funny, I hadn't heard that the ZR1 had a meth system.

The ZR1 is also 8.5 :1 Compression ratio (+-) Once you go and up the power on it you need to either have meth, or run race fuel in it like we do in our project ZR1, and I recall seeing where LPE did the same in their project ZR1. You really cannot properly compare the two in this situation IMHO.

Upsides to meth are simple; lower IAT's, octane on demand, clean intake/pistons, basically the ability to not only make a lot more power on pump gas, but the ability to continue to make the power you did on the dyno in real world situations.

Downsides; filling the tank, although it's simple, you still have to do it. The possibility of a failure, but there should be proper safeties in place from your tuner in the event of that ever happening the car would just fall on it's face in power, and you get it corrected. Either way, your never stuck anywhere, you would just have to keep it out of high boost until it's corrected.

I hope that helps.

Well, my point was just that any such sweeping statement as "standard practice on all supercharged Vettes" is Typical car show blather.

In some circumstances meth is not required, in some it's optional, and in some it's mandatory. It's up to the development engineer (that would be the owner or tuner of a modded FI Vette) to determine which applies in his case.

I think you did a great job of pointing out the advantages and disadvantages.

Agreed, meth is not mandatory as long as you are within the limits of the fuel you are using.

I also look at meth as safety from when I put in 93 and it is really 87. The octane boost is still there under heavy boost. I have been using meth over 4+ years on my forged C5 and like that my IATs in the heat in Texas is a non issue. Sure I do not need meth with a forged setup, but then running 20lbs of boost with meth is a good thing

How do you really know the limits of the fuel you are using?
Pump may say 91 octane.....but is it every time you fill up? Could it be bad gas?
If your car has been tuned with 91 octane in the tank and you fill with some bad 91 octane gas there could be catastrophic results....especially if some tuner car challenges ya on remote highway somewhere.
Meth makes me sleep better.

just think of it as cheap insurance. just use meth for safety and a little more power. dont rely on meth just for high octane fuel

All us "boost" guys are "meth" heads. The system just plain works and the safety factor is awesome.

06.Z51.MontRed.Vert, are you making the numbers in your avatar with a stock cam or aftermarket? Pump gas or race fuel?

Damn, 676 rwhp stock shortblock, stock heads, stock cam, pump gas, and meth? That's sick. I thought for sure with those numbers it had either race gas or a cam. Is that with a filter?

Yikes.......
I do make an effort to not buy the no name variety.

To me a meth and a flip drive are important additions to a supercharged vette....especially if you have a heavy right foot
....like me.

Total stock engine, stock cam, pump gas, AND thats with 410's. ECS could have bumped it further but we kept it on the "safe" side

06.Z51.MontRed.Vert, how much boost? I assume you're using a restrictor plate?

I'm one of the few that is against it. If I want more power I'll fill up with 109 and turn up the boost.

I do agree with the above posters, tune for 91 and run it for safety.
