Default I got a crazy Idea about Fuel Pumps?

so in my endless quest of reading about the C6 fuel systems i have learned the following.

The base C6 intank pump is not capable of supporting High HP applications.*

TO instal an upgraded pump (Z06 or custom unit)is a ROYAL PITA. It requires dropping the tranny, rear end, gas tanks, and a crap ton of other parts.

my Idea is this...

Attack it from above.
Why not cut the floorboard directely above the left side pump?

C6 NAY SAYERS: "GASP that is sacrligious. Thal shal not cut up Thy car!! Blashphmier!!

... well think about it. the opening only needs to be , what ? 6" x6" square. Then done plop in a 7"x7" metal flat sheet metal part and Glue/epoxy/rivette/staple/Duct Tape it inplace.

The carpet will cover any screwups.

what do ay think? am i smoking crack?

cheers
chad

* yes yes I know you can add BAP to the Base C6 pump. There are some draw backs that are completely debatable.
- it will only support up to 6XX HP
- shortend pump life span
- hobbs switch failure
- increased risk engine Kableweey due to listed failure.

Im not saying I personally agree with the listed points, just that they are out there.

Actually, the left side tank can be removed without dropping the rear craddle. Remove wheel and fender liner, and it comes right out. I just saw it done when they replaced the fuel pump in my car last week.

the Gm service manual quotes dropping the tranny and rear cradle..

.. and we all know that the GM service manual is always right

How about you give it a try on your car, post up a how-to thread and let us know how it comes out?

I've heard of people doing it on a variety of other vehicles, but never a C6. Sure you can't find another project to do at the same time to make the effort worthwhile? Clutch or diff maybe?

Or maybe someone who has done the "drop the driver's side only" technique could chime in with details of their experience?

I, too, thought the cradle had to be dropped, and I'm sure the manual states just that (many more hours to charge the customer). But, I saw it with my own two eyes. Took the mechanic less than an hour to have it removed.

it is possible to do without pulling everything. but i would say the first time...you will want it out! cutting the floor is not that bad a idea and has been done before but not on vettes. my bonneveille has a panel bolted to the floor trunk just for this reason. the biggest issue is getting the tank disconnected from the other tank and lines...pita!!!!

oh,....u cant cut above the pump location, thats where you weld the roll-bar in,it's a metal cross=section for support,.......no cutting.

I'm sorry. I don't understand. please elaborate.

Do you mean if I were to add an aftermarket roll-bar then 'attacking from above' is not an option due to compromising a major safety component?

or

are you saying there is a OEM GM metal bar there that you dont want to cut or else you will damage the 'super structure' of the vehicle?

ooh, good idea SinsterC6!

(insert sound of typing on Google Image search)

this is on the zr1 2009.

I bet its there.. my gut tells me that hole/opening is there for installation of stuff during assembely.
the only catch i see so far is lifting the pump out. is there enough 'headroom' angle to so?

Idk about the angle. You still have the cut the fiberglass floor out to find out though,....sounds like a lot of distruction
