Default Pi$$ing contest

I am a member of this forum but I am a lurker of this section. While I am fortunate enough to own a C6, I'm not fortunate enough to join the ranks of most of you guys here...YET. I am very impressed at the numbers acheived out of most of the cars here. Most notably, Ricky Bobby's latest video of an 8 second pass.

I, like most on this forum, have diehard Ford friends that swear nothing on this planet can touch the mighty Mustang. I mentioned to them that the new fastest time was in the 8's. They seemed impressed for the moment. They even viewed the video and gave the thumbs up. However, not to be outdone, they came back with a story that was posted on SVTPerformance forum that some tuner shop that had a built new Shelby 500GT that simply "turned up the boost" and took their Mustang to the track and broke into the 7's upon viewing that same 8 second pass of Ricky Bobby's Vette. I have not seen this Mustang nor have I confirmed that it is a true street car but my friends just seem to be so typical of the "Mustang group". They seemed so pleased to tell me that a simple adjustment to this Shelby could easily surpass the Vette. I dunno, maybe I let them crawl under my skin a little too much but as mentioned in another thread on here, I would LOVE to see the real monsters on here go at it and see what you can get these cars to do.

I know Mustangs are straight line cars and that's all they ever will be. I guess the arguement can be made that a 8 second all around performer is a better car than a 7 second drag strip car. I guess I'm looking for some of your opinions on this subject and yes I know someone will always be faster. What kind of times do some of you think you can actually get these vettes to put down while being a true street car? 8 seconds to me is unreal now for a street car, especially being independent suspension. Thanks for any input.

There's not a doubt in my mind a 1000+ whp Mustang can go 7's.

My personal opinion is that I am not too terribly impressed by how fast you can get a 4000+lbs car with all the aerodynamics of a brick to go down 1/4 mile of specially treated blacktop. Most of us drive on real roads that require our cars to accelerate, turn AND stop, and those are things no mustang will ever do as well as a Corvette

Powerlabs (above) makes good points...

Different strokes for different folks.

I've seen some fine Mustangs in my day!

I truly believe that we'll see some Daily driven C6's in the LOW 8's THIS year. There aren't many Mustangs rolling around that can say that (but there ARE SOME OUT THERE)!

It's always a pissing contest...

I'm a car guy so I'm impressed with the numbers of the heavier, less aerodynamic Mustang. Are the same numbers not in the range of our cars in stock suspension form?

Not exactly...twin turbo purpose built drag car running 23lbs of boost and dyno'd at 1200+ hp.

I'm not sure what this proves. That appears to be a purpose built drag car, not a street car.

That's a 7 second pass but that car is far from what I call street trim. The corvettes that have ran 9's are also driving around town and getting 20+ mpgs. Those cars are what I call street trim. I can't see that 7 second Ford being able to drive with traffic on the local highway. Look at the size of those rear tires . Is that a stock size? Does TireRack carry them in stock yet?

okay, my sig has 801 hp and I'm getting a Ysi unit trade up for more hp cause the T-trim is out of its efficiency

These Ford engines to get in the low 800 hp they need almost double my boost of 12psi. granted its turbo not SC....My question is it because the are using 5.4L? and its a math thing with displacement?

It's a number of things sir vettesalot.

From CI, Cam specs, head flow, overall VE....

Generally speaking, smaller engines require considerably more boost to make big power. Naturally we have huge engines so it doesn't take much to make killer power!

I totally agree. we dont have back seats to take out, in order to get to 3400 lbs those gotta go, the A/C, roll cage install. probably no passenger seat. multi bolt rear end soild axle, pan hard bar all the rest for a "drag car". Ive seen vettes here in Houston on our tracks that fast or faster but the same has been done to them.

Your guys at the office or where ever gotta do the apples to apples comparison.

Well we went 8.81 on the thrid pass after a 30 mile run with the heated seats on yes both seats were in the car , Now to say my car feels stock would be silly but by no means is it a track only car my wife wheels it around !

That's what I'm saying. I mean "true street". All the lights, carpet, radio, A/C, etc. Anybody can take just about anything and gut the hell out of it and boost it to post good numbers.

One of my main questions is can these vettes post even better numbers than they have currently without a solid rear axle? I know the arguement can be made that the tranny has been changed but let's say it's an even playing field on the tranny. Will an independent suspension car ever be capable of posting the times of a solid axle?

I may be a bit biased, but I honestly don't see how a fully dressed Shelby(with the given tranny upgrade to make things equal) can post better times than the lighter vette with close, if not more, power ratings unless the rear axle is the X factor. I realize I am most likely simplifying this by a lot and there are many more factors involved but something doesn't add up to me.

Before I post anything else, I will find out more about this Mustang in question so I can give you guys some more details to comment on.
