Default What's the best way of "qualifying" prospective buyers??

I'm getting ready to sell my '07 LT3 coupe, but want to minimize appointments and test drives with people that aren't serious. Are there any tricks to separate the qualified buyers from guys that are just bored and want to drive a muscle car for the afternoon?
I want to be cooperative, and get the car sold. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Really? Why would you object to a buyer paying money to verify what you say the car is before they shell out $20+ grand? I know about cars but I’m not a mechanic. I paid for a pre-purchase inspection with no seller problems and just sold my vette and would have taken it to a mechanic had the buyer asked. That’s how confident I was of my car. If a seller told me no mechanic inspection, I’d say forget it.

I recently sold a 90s sportsbike that I'd just restored and had tuned, and had similar worries.

I felt alot better after a good half hour on the phone discussing the bike and getting a feel for the buyer.

Didn't seem like a type kicker, knew all the details in the advert about all the little mods and tweaks, willing to travel, and already had a temp insurance policy set up.

Sale all went well.

Alarm bells would have rung if, for example they hadn't read the advert fully, didn't know what possible problems to look for when viewing, no insurance or way to get it home etc. Worse is when they jump straight to haggling or trying to get you to arrange delivery for them and so on.

But a good long phone call helps weed out the riff raff.

Maybe I've been lucky but when I sold my low mileage '93 Anniversary Edition C4 a while back I had lookers and no one drove it, including the buyer. In the 2000's I sold a '95 C4 and '99 C5 and didn't have any people who obviously couldn't afford it. IMO it's part of selling a nice car. What insurance is for.

No test drives without proof of funds.

You are selling a car, NOT a house…

Asking the correct questions and listening to what the prospective buyer is saying is the key to weeding out joyriders. I have sold 2 cars, 1 boat and an RV via private party overt the last 2 years, all buyers were out of the area. If someone is willing to drive 4+ hours to “see” the item for sale, then that is a good enough test of a prospective buyer’s intention for me.

Default ttt

If they bring a friend along to ride in the back seat on the test drive that would be red flags for me.
Stay safe

If they say they have never heard of a LT3 C6 they probably are good to go.

Maybe it’s just me, but to be honest, that’s just part of selling a vehicle (or anything, for that matter). Not everyone who looks at the car is going to buy it, even if they’re serious. Maybe you get lucky and the first guy that shows up buys it, maybe not, but you’re going to have to invest time into selling the vehicle. If you don’t want to do that, just take it down to the dealer and let them buy it. In my experience, people that actually show up for appointments are generally serious, but it’s a judgement call on whether you think they’re just looking for a joy ride when they get there.

Write a well written ad with quality pictures and you’ll attract the right kind of buyer. Don’t make it more difficult than needed for someone to buy your car.

providing proof of a loan is a lot easier than driving 4+ hours. A lot of people don't mind kicking tires and getting a test drive

.......in the past 6 years we sold a 92 Corvette....40 Ford Coupe....55 Chevy.
I drove the prospective buyers on a ride....not one asked to drive the car. All 3 people purchased it on the spot with money in hand.
In your ad place...." Qualified buyers only...no Joy Riders....if you have to ask the Wife....bring her with you or don't bother coming.

Another good avenue to sell your is at a Corvette Show...or a Cruise-in. If they need to have the car looked at by a Mechanic....tell them to forget it.................

I find some of these suggestions laughable and wouldn't bother looking at the sellers car unless the prices were so good that dealing with jerks could be worth it. I would think kids selling Focus ST's or Civic RS's would deal with more problems than people with Corvettes.

And how does one provide proof of a used car loan?
Give me a break, even a pre-qualification letter from a bank for a home purchase is basically just a piece of paper and is NO guarantee those funds will be available at closing.
Let them drive 4 hours, it's not me doing the driving, if you want to sell it as quick as possible then you need to accommodate the prospective buyer, if you have any common sense a brief conversation before the test drive with the prospective buyer can easily weed out the idiots.
