What happened that caused Chevy to replace the motor under warranty at 40,000 miles?

Do not know , while shifting 2nd to third at about 5,000 rpm a connecting rod disconnected and opened a window in the side of the motor- Chevy was great, no thought of trying to repair, just gave me a new motor, dry sump system under warranty ( I did pay for a new clutch while it was apart)
