advice on buyin used ZR! instead of a GT-R
I'm a proud owner of an 02' Z06 but have been wanting more in the last year or so. Since the C7 Z06 is at least a year away my options are either a new GT-R or a used ZR1. I found a local (St.Louis) 2010 ZR1 w/3ZR with VIN: 1G1YN2DT1A5800937 that drove nice, but I noticed two issues. We couldn't get the touch screen to power on. The radio played, but the screen was dead no matter what we tried. They said they'd fix it at least, but it's concerning that they weren't even aware there was a problem with it. Second possible issue was the clutch was catching pretty high. My 02' has over 63k on it and catches about the same point, but it slowly got there. This ZR1 only has around 33k on it. I would hate to pick this up and have to drop $2K+ on a replacement clutch in a year or two. Is this catch point normal? According to Autocheck, it was a single local owner who traded it in last year and the dealer kept it. In St. Louis ELCO is one of the larger Vette dealerships.
To cover misc. non-wear items, the salesman said I could opt for a certified GM 1yr bumper-bumper and 2yrs of oil changes for about $600. Sounds great to cover things like a busted NAV screen, but the clutch and brakes aren't covered or course. It was sitting outside and after all the rain I couldn't do a full paint inspection but I can already tell it's in worse shape than my 02' garage queen. It's sitting at $65k firm so as long as there's nothing too deep I can pay a good detail shop to polish it if they're super careful with the carbon parts.
Hopefully you guys can alleviate my concerns and keep me in the Z family. I have always driven American made sports cars, but the GT-R is really tempting with a full warranty for $30k more. If this sounds like a good deal that won't break me when out of warranty I'll jump at it.

While it sounds like a decent deal, for lets say another 5k over what they're asking for that one you could find one with less than 15k miles and show paint if you look just a little, and in the end you'll be much happier and probably keep it longer with fewer issues.
Follow your gut, it sounds like you know already.
As for the GT-R, I've driven one and they are a class act, I don't see owning one personally but its got a cool factor for sure.

My nephew has a 013 GTR and it's a great working car but I just find it way to darn big for my liking and the only advantage he has over my stock ZR1 is at 0-60 other than that I have him...like someone posted here if I were you for a bit more money get a lower K ZR1..either way good luck with the one you go with!!

If you get a PM from a guy named fartpipe don't open it. He is a GTR owner himself and is looking for a friend. It just me but I would'nt be buddy's with a guy named fartpipe.

There are lower mile ZR's out there but for the price that's not bad. See if you can get service records and get a better idea of the car. 33k miles is nothing on these cars it's just not new. It has potential to be a great car.
GTR's can do some amazing things on the track but I have heard they are very numb on the street. They do get to hot on the track and the ZR is better there.

FartPipe on instaban... got it!
So it's a true local one owner car. Business owner who drove it to work daily. Bought with 4 miles one it and next record was around August last year when he traded it in to the dealer it's still sitting at. They just dropped $5k off the price. Brand new set of factory Michelins at least, but I have to wait for them to clean it before I can inspect the paint. I have a commuter car so my toy sits in a garage this time of year and we have 3-4 days of snow in the forecast for the next 7 days!
This car will be a daily driver only when it's less than 20% chance for rain. I don't have the cahones' to track the car, and I'm used to high HP RWD cars and the traction software on the ZR1 seems to nearly be the best around. I was stunned at how hard it pulled in 3rd gear when it was 25 degrees outside.
Autotrader right now doesn't show any 2010+ ZR1's for under $75k nationally. And even if I found the perfect car, I still have my 02' to deal with. Trading in at a local dealership is convenient and they seem to fair on value so far. I don't mind going to $75k, but proximity and trade in are big factors for me. Because of the bad weather, I'm having a heck of a time finding a day I'm willing to bring it just one hour from my house, let alone another state over.
Loving the advice guys. Thanks and keep it coming! I probably have a week before the weather clears to think about this.
