Default Safety Recall Notice 2011 ZR1 #638

It seems the rear hatch hinges may allow the rear hatch to separate from the vehicle in a crash. They will have to replace both rear hinges, the service will take about an hour to complete.[Ya never had a recall of any kind take less than two hours. There are two dealers in my area and I intend on interviewing both the service manager and the the assigned technician and will stay and watch the entire process. This may sound extreme but I want them to know I expect the car to be returned exactly as I gave it to them PERFECT. Emmett

I'm hip, bro. In fact, I might not even have the "upgrade" done. I don't GAF if the hatch comes off in crash. I don't ride back there.

...the voluntary recall is being done due to the unacceptable (per NHTSA ?) decapitation risk in the event of a rear-end collision at a high enough speed...

If my car was in the affected production range I would have it done, and quickly at that...

Who's at risk of decapitation - the Corvette driver or the rear-ender? I've wished almost as much upon tailgaters in SUVs, minivans ....

Edit: I searched and found the whole recall.

I believe it's the Corvette occupants...front hinge attachment points fail, putting undue stress on the rear hinge attachment points...?
rear hatch assembly separates/deforms/shatters more easily in the crash ? flying debris more dangerous for the Corvette occupants...

I'm not an engineer, but GM did not agree to this voluntary recall for altruistic reasons...it's all about liability & money.

I would have to say that this statement hits the center of the bullseye!

A friend of mine has 2011 ZR1 #666, not too far from yours

She also says that hers was the last ZR1 produced in JSB. But I don't know how accurate that is.

#638? Didn't you buy Harvey Gluck's 2011 #685?

What is strange that only "certain 2011 and 2012 coupes" are affected.

Did they had a bad batch of hinges from their supplier?

"Coupes" mean steel and aluminum?

OP - did you actually received the recall letter or just assume that yours is affected?

Well stated. I feel fortunate that mine was not built in the timeframe specified in the recall. If it had been, I would RELUCTANTLY have the work done.

Good luck to those that need to have the work performed. Don't forget to do a complete walk-around inspection of the car with the service rep before and after the recall work is done.
