Default Superchargers??

Whether a callaway or a Z1, will someone please tell me is this system the same as what was once called a "turbo" , like SAAB has.

also, has there been a maintenance issue with them? and do they all need to be replaced at some point.

Thanks everyone
Misty

Turbo's work off the exhaust for power, superchargers work off a belt to drive them for power and pull air thru the engine, two totally different systems

So the answer is "no" it is not a turbo system, it is a supercharger. as for replacement, what is your definition of "some point?" in the first 100K miles? no, unless you abuse the car, but even then, I would say highly unlikely.... but even so, it is a car and everything will have to be replaced at some point......

a turbocharger has oil running through it and without proper oil changes (abuse) or overboosting the turbos so they create tons of heat (abuse) you can get the oil in the turbos all gummed/caked/sludged up and need replacement. maybe this is what happened to your old saab that made you question turbos?

either supercharging or turbocharging has it's advantages and disadvantages and are both viable and reliable options for making extra power over a car with "just an engine." but no matter what you have, you need to take care of your car to make it last a long time.
