Advantages to Side Skirts?

Are there any distinct advantages to the ZR1 side skirts with connecting mud flaps, other than saving the paint from chipping? Do they work in conjunction with the front splitter to keep the car planted at speed? Also what do the side skirts weigh? Just wondering why they are not available as an option on the Z06.

They keep air out from under the car and weigh 1 pound per side.

That is unbelievably impressive! When I saw a shipping weight of 3 lbs for 2 skirts and the associated mud flaps I thought that they forgot to box up the skirts or something. Very, very impressive!!! I was thinking more like 50 lbs or something, shows how much I know. I guess that my figures were based on cost which now have to be adjusted to $1000 per pound.
