Nice guy I talked to. Told him I was just "looking around"... LOL OBVIOUSLY... Well anyway, he was pretty cool. Said they are getting 7 ZR1s, and they have already sold 5. They are an authorized Callaway dealer too. Pretty cool. I actually went to look at the C5 Z06 that I always see on the lot on my way to work.... Go figure, the thing sold. Oh well.
These cars don't get loose. After driving 2 different ones at Spring Mountain Advanced Driving School, one with 9,900 and one with 5,000, I have to say they drove and felt like my new one, no rattles and not even any noticable wear and tear, the cars are tight. Prior to that, I might have agreed with that sentiment about hard miles.

Pre production cars have VIN numbers also. Maybe there is some confusion as to what "pre-production" means. There were quite a few of them built and put in the hands of GM employees to drive before any were built for sales to the public through dealers. It's a very common procedure for working out the bugs.

I am clear on what a production VIN # is vs. an EX code VIN #
Bottom line, the car was an early production car, #000002, in fact. Pretty cool, in my book
I added another post below to show where the car fits into all this w/ its VIN #. Pretty cool stuff
There are 3 #1 cars!
1G1YYR26R695800001 - LENO'S (First of the Production Run)
1G1YYR25R695700001 - PILOT GM CARS (TOTAL 60 BUILT)
1G1YYR26R495900001 - RESSLER'S (Special Auction Build)

I used to live in Grosse Point, MI during high school from 1968 to 1971. Many of my friend's fathers were auto executives. I'm not sure if they still do it today, but we were able to go and test some of the new cars on their test tracks before they were launched for public sale. Some of the fathers also brought them home on occasion.
It was a lot of fun for us as I'm sure you can appreciate. We were able to test out new Chevys, Oldsmobiles, and Dodge cars.
