The ZR1 we have at the shop has a VIN that ends with 700020. Does this mean it is #20? Also the one sold at Barret Jackson last year ends with 700001. Jay Leno's is 800001. What does the 7 and 8 mean? I thought the one at the auction was the first one built. Can someone help break down these last 6 digits.

Thanks.
There are three vin sequences for ZR1. Series 95700001 is for the "pilot cars". Most of these cars were built in early June and most have since been sold to dealers. Chevrolet still has this sequence #1. We just sold ours which was 95700006.
Second, is 95800001. This is the production ZR1's. Jay Leno received #1. These cars began production in late August.
The third sequence is 95900001 and this is Dave Ressler's car that he bought at Barrett Jackson and was delivered in July. It is the first "saleable" ZR1.
This really puts into question the value of having #1!

Thanks for the good info Greg. I wondered how they distinguished the pilot cars they are now selling vs. the retail sale cars. I thought typically pre-production cars didn't usually have real VINs and couldn't be sold. I guess maybe that is only for prototype cars and not the build verification cars. Do you know how many pilot cars they built?
Jeff

Usually they do not sell these cars. GM needed money. In 2006, they did sell some of the Z06 pilot cars and I bought two of those while working at a Chevy dealer in Kentucky.
There are experimetnal cars also that have an EX in the vin. If you've been watching Barrett-Jackson this week, they have talked about that some. If you get a car with an EX, you can't title it. A lot of these Barrett-Jackson cars can't be driven on public roads. That would be a bummer.
Each Zone/Region has the opportunity to offer the cars to dealers. There are a lot of strings attached. To get the cars you have to take LOTS of additional inventory (other new GM product). They are using these cars as bargaining tools to get dealers to take on more inventory basically.

What is the difference between Jay's 95800001 "production" car and Dave's 95900001 "saleable" car.
The real question is what is a "production" car if it is different than a "saleable" car.

There is no difference other than color and price tag. Dave bought the right, as we know to have the car painted any color. He chose LeMans Blue. Jay's was Cyber Gray. Dave's is a "production" car with a unique vin and color.

I'm not sure you answered the question. My car is 800437. I'm still confused about the 9 series cars. Are there any other than the blue 1M car.

Does this mean Dave's car is the only ZR1 that will have a 9 as the 12th digit in the VIN?
