The TRUTH about the ZR1 LS9 engine. What everybody MUST read before posting
It surprises me to see that people still think what you see through the hood window is a piece of plastic. Maybe that is a tribute to GM sourcing such a beautifully smooth casting with raised and painted lettering, but its also a source of misinformation. I'm here to clear the air.
I'll type it in big bold lettering.
The object in the hood window is the INTERCOOLER HOUSING and is made of ALUMINUM. IT IS NOT A PLASTIC COVER
Unless you are considering the small piece of blue plastic which covers the water manifold to the intercoolers, there is no plastic in that window.
Jeremy Clarkston; are you reading?

I've read posts about looking at a plastic engine cover through the window.
If somebody makes the comment you are reffering to, they are also wrong. It is made from polycarbonate, not plastic.
Either way IMHO the clear panel, regardless of what it's comprised of (polycarbonate is plastic BTW), is cheesy and detracts from what otherwise is a beautiful automobile.

Ok, you got me there. Polycarbonate is plastic, but I think just saying its plain old plastic cheapens it. Its like calling the LS7's titanium connecting rods just metal. Sure, titanium is a metal, but it doesn't convey the high-tech nature of it.
Lets not turn this into a debate about if they should have put the hood window in or not. I think that has been already.

I think the hood is innovative and bold. I think we are all on the look out for any ZR1's on the road and that will definitely be the calling card. Like you, I just pointed out the other day on this forum it's not plastic but the top of the supercharger. You're right though, GM made it so refined, it doesn't look like a part of the motor. THE HOOD IS GOOD! Can't wait to see it through the windshield. To me it hearkens back to the day of the shaker hoods. A special calling card....
To each their own, but no matter what it is made of, it is still not a very interesting thing to be showcasing. I like the hood rise and shape of the rise, but am not sure it needs the clear panel. I thought my opinion would change when I saw it in life, but I have now seen four of them and still feel the same. The way the cover surround is designed, it almost gives the impression of being a one piece cover. It would have been a lot more impressive if they did a Katech style treatment with exposed covers and coils etc. The look of the supercharger would work better at that point to me.
Im too busy driving to see the hood window!hehe - In fairness -to its his own. GM wanted something to show and its part of the ZR1. Just driviing it makes you forget about everything. Its a great car with or without the hood window.By the way - GM made it right - when you are driving - the carbon hood really stands out from the front view.
Honestly, I like the window. Some don't, i do. I think its done is a tasteful manner and not ricer in a which way.
Why some don't like it, i dunno, I think its unique. Those that don't like it, have you seen one in person? I have, and it looks good! The brakes are just AWESOME!!!

I agree completely. If the intent is to have a window to show a cool (no pun) looking component, then why did they make it look like a plastic engine cover? The entire window thing is goofy as hell. Go look under the window of a Ferrari F430 and you'll see what does deserve a window!
If a lady is going to leave her curtains open at night, I want her to look like Halle Berry, not the fat lady in the circus.
