Nice. That is the first time I have seen the oil cooler. Great overview - Meegan's wording was quite precise. Addtl quotes from him, some not as current:
Quote:
We've heard rumors as high as 650 horsepower, but at this writing Chevy isn't talking specifics. According to Ron Meegan, assistant chief engineer on the LS9 project, the goal was a minimum of 100 horsepower per liter, and "we're definitely in the hunt to meet our target." How about torque? "We expect it to be close to 600 pound-feet." You can also expect a big percentage of this massive thrust to be on tap just beyond idle. And you can expect this to be the first Corvette subject to a gas-guzzler tax.
“The sixth-generation design of the supercharger expands the ‘sweet zone’ of the compressor’s effectiveness, broadening it to help generate power lower in the rpm band,” said Ron Meegan, assistant chief engineer. “To put it simply, the low-end torque is amazing.”
Ron Meegan, the assistant chief engineer for the new 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1's supercharged V8 (and formerly a member of the original ZR-1's engine team from 1990-'95), says he expects that once the new car's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 is certified, it will produce "greater than 620 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 595 pound-feet of torque in the 3,600-to-4,000-rpm range, depending on some last-minute tuning items."
In the planning for this engine, the GM Powertrain team led by Sam Winegarden and Ron Meegan had a number of goals. Not only did they want the most powerful production Corvette engine ever, it had to compete with the best engines in the world for both power and refinement. After all, the ZR1 is intended to be docile and easy to drive at low speeds while still having the capacity to exceed 200 mph.
The high octane characteristics of E85 would be well suited to an engine like the LS9. However, according to Sam Winegarden, the higher fuel flow rates required to make up for the lower energy density would have had too much of a negative effect on low speed drivability.
Hi GrampZ,
This was all posted about a month ago under the 'New Numbers' post.
We will see how close GM is with their 620HP postings.....
Actually, it was not. The video is awesome, and was not on the "New Numbers" thread. Neither were the various quotes and links that I researched specifically for this thread.

Autoblog digs deep into the ZR-1 Corvette LS9 engine with Ron Meegan.

I actually took the quotes from the article "Forget King of the Hill, Meet God of the Mountain" in the New Numbers article. That is what I was referring too, which came out on 12-19-2007. The one article was posted from there. It seems that most of the 'news' nowadays is old stuff but enjoyable reading and I'm still waiting for some Real numbers on the Horsepower. I'm retiring soon and probably won't get a ZR1 anyway but the whole build was interesting, especially all the ideas that people came up with. Now, I have a question for you. Just for fun, no arguments from me either way, you come up with many articles and I wanted to see if you could find out anything about my question.
'What car is the color Tangerine, will make both Turbo fans happy as well as the Supercharged guys, has more Horsepower than a speeding ZR1, is topless, not a convertible, but a roadster, was made where the mules were, and has half the cylinders of the mighty ZR1?
The answer will be over at the Autorama at Cobo. I'll check back if you are interested.....

I'm not sure what any of that means, but... hokay.

I'm very glad to know that. I guess.
