Default paint cost on ZR1

Had a certified Vette mechanic at a local dealer last week tell me that the paint for a ZR1 was $30-60000 a gallon. I can't believe this. I remember that multicolor paint Ford used a few years back was pricey but on this I'm incredulous. Anyone know anything about it?

The expensive part is the protective clear coating on the un-painted carbon fiber parts. I'd think the paint is the same as any other Vette.

Your certified mechanic is not certified in reading comprehension. The coating used for UV protection in the clearcoat that goes on the exposed carbon fiber parts is $60k/gal. But they only use a small portion mixed in with the clearcoat to get the end result. This makes the UV protection cost about $2500/gal and is only used on the EXPOSED carbon fiber parts. Roof, side skirts, splitter. The rest is regular paint like any other Vette.

As Sissors used to say "Reading is fundamental".

Actually the information came from Jay Leno's introduction of the car at the Barrett Jackson's. I remember him saying it was $60,000 per gallon.

Thanks robvuk for clarifying the process.

I think you're confusing certfied with certifiable - as in mentally challenged. Unless this paint is somehow embedded with pieces of The True Cross, I'd say this is not really true.

If Jay Leno wants to pay $30K per gallon, I suppose he can afford to.

When that certified mechanic works on your ZR1 just remind him that the paint cost $60K a gallon, so he better not scratch it or it will come out of his flat rate.
