Default I think I dropped a valve today

Driving a few hours ago very easy just had the oil changed yesterday sitting at a light and I start hearing funny noises like maybe a header gasket blew. No warning lights at all so I tried to ease her home and the sputtering began and the oil pressure seemed a tad low so I shut it down. I got it towed home and started it to drive it into the garage and it sounded like a 1000 sewing machines, not good! I had PCM performance out of Mooresville NC do the heads two years ago to prevent this if this is the issue?? Any thoughts? I just lost my mother over Thanksgiving due to some creep texting going 80mph while she was on the side of the road due to a minor fender bender. Not to compare the two but it sucks for this to happen when I'm trying to celebrate her on this day. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, John

Sorry to hear. Could be a broke valve spring or rocker possibly. If you dropped a valve you would have had catastrophic failure. Hopefully something minor

If you dropped a valve your motor wouldn’t run

Sorry about your Mom. From my experience it took 4 years till I could smile remembering my Dad. I had a similar experince at the track and I actually pulled a rocker arm stud and what a racket that rocker slapping around made. I would bet its a rocker or a broken valve spring.....or at least hope thats what it is!! Not a bad fix. A dropped valve would have been catastrophic and you would know. One thing not torqued correctly, one thing not seated right, or near the limit of the valve spring can show on one, but I would be diagnosing what went wrong and change it all. Let us know, i think you may have dodged that bullet. Its not a bad job to pull coils off and pull the valve covers...your answer may be right there.

Sorry to hear about losing your mom, especially harsh when it was totally preventable.

I suggest you take the half hour and pull the valve covers and have a look, hopefully it’s not major although oil pressure drop is concerning. I agree with the others that said if you dropped a valve you would definitely know it.

Good luck.

The easiest approach would be to pull the spark plugs. If there's anything not right in any of the cylinders (especially if it actually is a dropped valve) you'll end up with a smashed up (or worse) tip when you pull it out.

You mentioned you had the oil changed, did you change the oil or did you take it somewhere? Possible someone overfilled it? Underfilled it?

As someone else mentioned, dropping a valve pretty much bricks the engine instantly

My guess is the oil change was messed up, a lot of non dealers have no idea how to fill a dry sump and have been the cause of many engine failures

Something is fishy with the problems and oil change being so close together.

Man, you guys have had some rough times lately. I so very sorry to hear any of this. I lost my mom 41 years ago, when I was 27 years old, and she was only 58. She suffered for years with lung disease before she passed. I don't know if I ever really got over it 100%. But I did learn to accept it. OP, I once broke an outer valve spring......At about 20mph........With only 300 miles on the engine. That little inner spring saved my ***. OP......I hope you have dual springs. If you do, it may simply be a broken spring. I'm here to tell you, with "just" a broken valvespring, mine sounded like a bunch of little 4 inch tall men inside, all beating on metal with little hammers, like a WHACK WHACK WHACK you'd have to hear to believe. Anyway, I got lucky, and I hope you will, too. Again sorry for both of you guys, and your losses.......

Commiserating on losing your mom. Lost mine last month to brain cancer, it’s going to be a long time before anything feels normal again. Good luck finding the source of the noises, as others said it may not be as bad as feared at least!

Default Lost Mom

I lost my Mom February 28. I feel your pain and truly sympathize with you. I hope you get everything sorted out with the “1,000 sewing machines.”

You can say that again. My mum also suffered with lung disease, and while recovering from an emergency surgery back in the fall, it was complications from the lungs that ultimately caused her passing. She lived with me the last 6 months of her life, and although it was very difficult at times, I am very grateful for all that time together.

I'm confused? Are we taking dropped valves or deceased mothers here?

Both... OP lost his mom recently and thinks he may also have lost an engine. Folks are weighing in with condolences on both.
