Default Muffler Rattle

Traced an annoying exhaust rattle down to my passenger side muffler on my ZR1. Called Cultrag, stock replacements are on indefinite backorder. Decided to take advantage of the LG Motorsports 10% off sale and buy a GT4 cat-back exhaust system from them. Will be bolting up to a set of LG C6 ZR1 Super Pro long tube headers with high flow cats that are already on the car.

I'm going to see if I can find someone to repair the stock muffler once we get the old exhaust system off. I'm a little worried the GT4 system will be too loud for me. I'm getting old. Has anyone had luck repairing the stock mufflers?

Thanks for the feedback. Never had this problem with my 2009 ZR1, but it was stock.

Yes, repaired mine. Easy repair for any competent welder.

I have personally repaired more ZR1 mufflers than any other c6 npp mufflers. The ZR1 mufflers break all the time. I have a set on my GS and both of those broke. I have since repaired and braced them. These mufflers sound great but are very prone to cracking. IMO the 2011+ Z06 mufflers are the best and the only version I have not cut into. Those dont break and they sound identical to the ZR1's. I had a set of the 11+ Z06 muffs on my car as a loaner set until i fixed my ZR1 muffs. I dont have a clue what is different between them but there is something different, they dont break.

Does anyone think that quickly closing the flaps can exacerbate the baffle breaking, especially if partially on it? I was thinking that might put a lot of pressure on them, slamming them... Not sure if it helps, but I close mine when idling...

Negative, at first I thought it was excessive pressure built up from the delay of them opening at low RPM when the LS9 built boost. Then I put a set on my stock GS and those broke too.

They crack in 2 major areas. In the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) of the welds on the crossover (quiet) tubes and along the "X" in the walls of the mufflers.

This pic is the worst one I have repaired.

Ya, you talk like you fixed more than one so I thought you'd be able to provide more evidence

My stock mufflers started to fall apart as well on my Z06. The butterfly valve on the passenger side would always rattle and they just werent loud enough for me. I got a good deal on my LG GT4 exhaust and its way louder now. Sure there is some drone, but nothing turning up some music doesnt fix.

How is the loudest compared to Z06 with closed valves and with open valves?

Its not overbearing at all, but it does wake it up a bit. I like loud, so it may vary from person to person.

I dont need to provide evidence, just look at my post history if you want proof. Im not going to waste time looking through a bunch of old pics.

Any chance you have any pictures of the repairs? Looking for something to give guidance to a local exhaust guy here in Tulsa. If not, the picture you posted in this thread will be very helpful.

I love the sound. They may be too loud for me for normal cruising. Going to live with them for a while before making a final decision.
