Default New Pistons and Rings - Ported MSD Intake Manifold

Over the winter I had new MAHLE pistons and rings installed in my engine, and after three years of Tony Mamo's urging, I installed one of his ported MSD intake manifolds. All chassis dyno testing was done at Lingenfelter's Wixom, Michigan facility. Lingenfelter's chassis dyno is a Mustang. Results were corrected to SAE J1349 correction factors.

Click on the PDF attachment to view the chassis dyno results.

Wow nice increase, I am sure part of it was the manifold - but was something going on with the motor before maybe and the new rings and piston helped I see you went to a small oil ring (2mm vs 3mm). Power really gain was really from like 5,500 rpm on.

Apocolipse,
I believe part of the gain was the Mamo MSD and the other part was the new MAHLE 1.0mm - 1.0mm - 2.0mm rings. Regardless, 620 RWHP is fun to drive and much more than I thought we would see for power.

Absolutely - congratulations!

I have a mamo msd - great performance just keep an eye when the seals are setting.

Pretty incredible results congrats. Tony is putting a build together for me right now with of course one of his ported MSDs. I’ll be moving from a ported Fast as well, should be interesting....

Was the camshaft changed?

Its surprising how much the power delivery changed with the intake.

Typically with a compression increase (assuming this is the case), you will see the HP and torque simply shift up with identical shape of the curve.

Assuming you bumped compression 1/2 - 1 point I would have expected to see the midrange torque shift up 20-30 ftlbs, but it dropped 20 ftlbs?

Peak torque shifted significantly higher in the RPM range.

The gasket on the manifold compresses after some heat cycles and you need to retorque the manifold a few times. Just make like 5 passes with a torque wrench once a week for a couple weeks and then it settles in.

Nick,

To answer your questions, I started out trying to tell you all the things that changed on my engine - Mamo ported MSD intake manifold and a new ring package.

The camshaft stayed the same: 248 degree intake duration - 252 degree exhaust duration - 118 degree +2 lobe separation angle - .735" lift at the valve.

The heads are and were ALL PRO LSW12-1 with JESEL 1.80:1 rocker arms.

The compression ratio is and was 12.0:1.

I hope this helps clarify things..

Nice build, congrats. Not too many 620+ N/A cars running around especially on stock cubes.

Mirek,

Who did your dyno testing? What brand of Chassis dyno do they use - Dyno Jet or Mustang? What Correction Factor did they use, STP or SAE?

No clue, whatever Church tuning has. I was not looking for any number or whatever. My only requirement was that it (engine and tune) be easy to drive as possible so that my wife can learn stick and/or a “valet could manage it”. He did a great job 👍

The dyno may show more info

It put down 700HP at Westech when it was broken in with a single plane carb.
(Which is Very cool because it is the actual engine dyno used in magazines like HotRod, etc....and I can compare builds)

Btw Sweet C5 man. Mine is a black FRC !

Mirek,

That sure is a pretty engine. Whose intake and what carb is that? Westech corrects to STP, which was last used by the automotive industry in 1979. And, the power levels that STD dyno runs show needs to be reduced by 4.5% to bring them to the present SAE levels. Personally, I feel that the FRC and Z06 were the best body style of the C5 era. Thanks for your reply.

I Hope you do not have the same oil control issues with that ring package that has been reported by another forum member ,

So far, oil usage is significantly less than with the old 1.2mm - 2.0mm - 3.0mm ring package.

Too funny you brought up oil usage, I never thought of that and
I randomly checked mine yesterday and it was almost bone dry !
Then I started it and got immediately got the “low oil” message.
(I have like 400 miles on this engine ). It had a ported MSD for the rollers (per my sig) and on the engine dyno it had a Holly Sniper I think.

I will have to look at the build sheet for the ring info.....
