C6Z06 steering
A good friend of mine is buying a used track C6Z06. It is a 2006 model and was mainly built as a reliable track mule with a full cage for safety, T1 suspension, gutted interior, etc, not intended as a full-on race car. It runs OEM wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport S4 tires, OEM brake calipers, Hawk pads etc. Mainly intended to give safe rides around the track for all involved. Details about its history are sketchy. So here is the problem. The power steering of this track Z06 is over-boosted and darty and the driving experience does not give the same level of confidence as my 2008 Z06 which is running the same wheels and tires. The current owners of the 2006 track car say that these steering problems are absolutely normal for a 2006. Can this be true?
I realize that there was a change to the steering rack between the 2007 and 2008 model year, but I never heard any reports that were as severe as my friend is reporting.
If the above is normal for the 2006-2007 Z06s, is there any fix short of the different steering rack used in the 2008+ cars?

I have a2006 z06 track car just replaced the steering rack with a reman rack neither unit felt darty at all. Very precise. I did have a larger power steering cooler put in because the molded plastic boss for the sensor going into the rack started leaking. Otherwise my first rack was fine. The design with that molded plastic boss is absurd. IMO. Not the easiest job to replace a rack. Tight spacing for sure.

Compare how many turns lock to lock with another Z06. It should be the same ratio. Feeling darty is probably an alignment issue. Not enough caster or worn parts.

My Z06 sample is small... only one!
Mine feels great, def not over-assisted or darty. Look at the alignment. Too little caster could account for the overboosted feel. Too much F toe out, or any R toe out will make it twitchy, and excess play anywhere will do the same.

My 2007 Z06 doesn't feel darty or abnormal in any way.

Sounds like a chassis setup problem. Probably need to string the car and check for square then align to proper specs. I’ve seen the same complaints with cars with too much toe out (talking 3/8” or more).
