Default Help diagnosing tin can rattle noise

Hey Guys,

Several months ago I started to hear a tin can rattling noise when you press and let up on the gas, just coasting seems to be fine but accelerating and decelerating causes a tin can like rattle that I hear from the back passenger side of the car, near the passenger side rear wheel.

I've fully replaced the mufflers so I know it isn't that and I took off the quarter panel today looking for anything weird and there was nothing there at all.

Does anybody have any suggestions of what to check next?

Thanks!

This just happened to me it was my passenger side catalytic converter. The insides fell apart. Seems like a common issue and there is an emissions warranty that is 8yrs or 80,000 miles. This is what mine sounded like and the dealer is covering it under that warranty if your car is a 2010 and newer its worth calling and letting them run your VIN for it.

Very interesting, I will check my cats. Unfortunately my car is a 2009 so I don't think it would still be under warranty. I will call the dealer though just to see.

Was the sound that you heard coming from the rear of the car? The cats are up front but I suppose the sound could travel down the exhaust.

Try repositioning the spring tensioners that are on the exhaust before the rear end. Mine does the same thing. It goes away for a while when I do this.

Mine definitely sounded like middle of the car or toward the front more so than the rear. But i hear the cat material can dislodge and make its way to the mufflers as well and start getting spit out in chunks. But the best thing to do is get the car on some stands and get under it and do some investigating. I used a rubber mallet and tapped away on the pipes to see where the rattle came from. Goodluck!

And when you tapped on the cats it was obvious? I tapped on the xpipe and mufflers and didn't hear anything unusual

Check the fan blades on the alternator. That was my problem twice. Sounded like detonation and knock sensors picked it up.

Yes, especially compared to banging on the driver cat, the passenger definitely rattled.

Did the noise go away after a few minutes of engine warming?
I have something similar happens on cold start and goes away after 90 seconds.

No this noise actually only happens when the car is warm - when it is cold there is no noise at all

Stupid cats are useless, they only cause problems especially on F/I cars, I wish you all could just cut them out like those of us who live in freedom loving states can do. 🇺🇸
