Default RWHP level for good traction on street tires. What is the limit?

I am currently looking a couple of specs for a new cam in the Z06. I went from the stock LS7 to a H/C/I/E set up producing 558rwhp/522rwtq at Ragin Racin. Randy's set up is fantastic and this Stalker cam is just incredible in terms of building the mid range power. With that said, I want to step back with my set up in the near future and would like some input from you guys.

I went to the Z06/ZR1 Cup wheels with the Michilen PS2s as spec'd by the ZR1/Z07 package. Even with these tires warm, there is a significant issue with traction in 1st and 2nd and even in 3rd on many of the roads I drive. With it stock and on stock GYs, I had issues in 1st(who doesn't), but I could get it in 2nd and up. I would like to get there again. Where is that power number? Is 500rwhp/500rwtq too much?

I know it is a strange question for this forum, but I like to drive my Z distances more than just racing it around. The end result is really "do I" or "do I not" put the headers/high flows back on with the new cam. The rest of the mods are much easier to step back once back together.

I think it is more about the driver's ability. 350 rwhp is too much in many circumstances. You have to learn when to floor it and when to finesse it. You can't just floor a 500 hp car in every situation.

I'm certainly not there yet. I think it comes by practice, and maybe attending a driving school.

Good luck.

Slowly rolling into the throttle makes a big difference too.

550 is fine. Need a good set of fresh tires and a warm day and you will get traction.

I've been pleasantly surprised with how well my car hooks with Nitto Invos @ 525 at the wheels. Just a little footplay and it hooks up very well.

Depends on the tires, roads, weather, suspension, etc. I wouldn't turn power down but maybe focus on learning to modulate in the colder weather and enjoying it when warm. You can also do things like sways, bushings, etc to improve traction.

With everyone listing above. Throttle manipulation is a must for these cars. I've managed to hook 550 with 325 Invo's in 2nd in my buddies Z...and consistently put down 510 in mine. I've also witnessed 750 rwhp being about the traction limit for street tires (drag radials). I can't imagine needing more than 750 in a ZO6. You'd need a bike or a bugatti to run against it...

Totally depends on weather, pavement, and how sensitive your right foot is. You can't just stab the gas with over 500rwhp, and expect it to stick. You'll never hook first with street tires. 2nd should be managable, and 3rd should be no issue...In the summer anyway. Winter temps are a different story.

You could also look into a performance traction control system like racelogic.

Well, hard to say, but I have been well beyond the limit for a few years now, and I just added more ponies a couple weeks ago. Anything over 500rwtq with shred most tires that aren't R compound. You'll need to practice modulating that right foot because even traction control won't be enough to save you from spinning it if you're not careful.

Side note, I am happy the cooler weather is finally here, but my Michelin Pilot Super Sports are not, although they are much better than the Nitto Invos I had on it before.

I guess the real issue is that with the power now, for some reason, all the GM traction system can do is cry about throttle application. Yes, a judicious use of the right foot is required, but it wouldn't be so bad that if the TC could help a little in some of those "at a moments notice" happenings on the road. My TC is basically doing nothing and I have tried the various mods of it with no change.

I agree. My personal feeling is that my traction control is worthless. I am at 478 RWHP. On new tires (I have used the stock GoodYears, PS-2's and 345 Cups) and the result has been the same. They all hook solid in a first gear roll-on for about the first 4 or 5 months. After that they get progressively harder and lose grip. At 4,000 miles my GoodYears had virtually no grip. The PS-2's stopped hooking at about 6,000 and at 52,000 I actually had them break loose at peak torque in a 3rd gear roll on. The Cups, which hooked the best when new, started going away at about 3500. They now have 12,000 on them and still hook a 2nd gear roll on. I haven't done any internal engine mods because I am also one of those guys that would like more traction before I ever go to more power. Good luck.
