I just did this in fact. I replaced the stock pistons with diamond coated 10 to 1 pistons. I had WCCH port the Ls9 castings. My car is twin turbo'd. Made 1105rwhp on 22psi yesterday.
I'm not familiar with LS9 rods.

That's the point of this thread. Wasn't aware of anyone making pistons that would play nice with the stock rods. I'm in for details too

Sorry old mother, is this a ls9 you are rebuilding or are you starting a fresh? If a new build i say go forged ls3. Well proven and loads of bits out there. If it's already a ls9 then there is good reason to use stick with the ls9 and get pistons.

The problem with strong motors is no one is willing to take them to bits and make stronger internals in case they are not as strong! Lol

The other thing is we need some of you gys with loads of cash to TT you ZR1s and turn the boost up till they bust! Then we would all know how strong they are. GM could be on to a winner here if the bottom end is stronger and cheaper than the compertion.

No.I have a grand sport with a custom twin kit. Has a new ls9 long block with a custom piston and WCCH stage 2 ported new LS9 casting. Katech studs, katech ported ls9 oil pump. Made 23psi today at TI. Sam miller is the tuner and rebuilt the entire car when i got it back from another shop over a year ago. Taylor at DP Has re done parts of the kit. Car still has some left in it.

Great set of parts and some good people working on your car! I bet that thing is just insane to drive. Makes a tad more than double the stock rwhp of my ZR1 (555rwhp). We should meet up for a coffee or beer sometime.

I hate to get this thread back on track....but, you're using an LS9 block and nothing else LS9 related in the short block? I was hoping to use the stock rods on the rebuild. Just replace the pistons.

How much did the pistons run you?

No all the hard parts in the motor are stock LS9 besides the pistons.

Stock ls9
crank
rods
block
lifters
gaskets
heads(ported by WCCH)

The only thing i changed was the piston and it wasn't for strength. Just wanted a tad more compression. I'm confidant that at this power level the stock ls9 piston is plenty. With a stock stroke in these motors any piston is going to be pretty strong. The compression height of the ls9 piston is 1.443. This is due to the ls9 having a shorter rod. Which makes the assembly and piston that much stinger by design.

About 900 for the custom pistons and another 200 for the ring set. Diamond made them. The came with a thermal coating on the tops.
