Default Power Steering leacking

Good Day

This refers to people that track their cars.
Does your power steering cap leak?. Mine does about half a teaspoon every session. Is my cap defective or is it something I need to live with?

I've never seen that. I'd suggest having it looked at.

I saw a lot of that on the early C6 Z06s, but no problem on the ZR1.

I have it on my ZR1 (and all my previous Vettes) when tracking. If you're heating up the power steering fluid past the coolers ability, it will seep some out of the cap. It's normal and not an issue.

If it doesn't happen to people, they aren't heating up the fluid enough.

Texas dudes drive hard..lol

I checked the fluid level after I lost a pretty significant amount on the track and Cold is at the max.... It may have been a case of overfill.. Ordered a new cap anyway 8 bucks. Will try a few things and report.

You keep on over heating the pump like that and its going to be a phone call to turn one for a new pump. They are cheap and spin less when the rpms are high.

I drove my old '08 LS3 Vette for several track events with no power steering fluid showing on the dipstick. I would hear a weird whining noise when next to walls while at the track and wondered what it was. Turns out it was very low power steering fluid. I added fluid and pump functioned normally for several more track events.

In short, I think the power steering pumps are a little tougher than you may think.

Thats what they do. They will be fun for a bit but the seals in the pump get ruined and will eventually start leaking out the front of the pump. My Z06 did it even though I never let the fluid get low.

Do you have a specific recommendation?

We already have a power steering cooler and I don't think there is an upgrade outside of whats on there cooler wise. There is a company called Turn One who offers an aftermarket pump. The casing is identical to stock and the internals are different so that the pump doesn't over spin at high rpm. Awesome company to deal with from my experience and everyone elses that I read on here.

Thanks. I got in contact with them. They seem to have a pump T40Y that supposedly fits in our cars and does the trick. Will report.

The tank wouldn't matter because its just the reservoir but its interesting about the pump. I would find out from GM if they are the same part number between the two cars. Possibly Turn One doesn't just know they are the same.

It would be interesting... Please do..

From European counterparts I hear they do have similar issues when tracking and the solution they suggest is Tennis sweat bands... (to absorb the fluid)

If I am correct the base corvette will have a different pump due to not having a cooler for the power steering pump. Z06 and ZR1 both have the cooler.

Again, common effect and it's nothing to worry about too much. This past time at the track a guy who had some race experience also recommended a trimmed shop rag and zip ties. I just wipe up the lip every few track sessions. The fluid loss is very minor.

I agree the fluid loss is minimal but the real issue is you are are cavitating the fluid inside the pump and boiling it. That's why you are seeing it come out of the reservoir.
