Default Wheels and tires for track use

What wheels and tires do you recommend for the track?

I like the stock wheels and tires. Good stick, long lasting, rain friendly, no extra junk to lay around the garage and need to be hauled to the track.

I have a set of 18" Forgeline EV1-Rs, which are no longer available. Forgeline has a replacement 18" wheel that still fits the ZR1, but I can't remember the model.

As for tires, I'm a fan of Toyo R888s in 335/18 and 295/18 sizes. They won't grip as well as something like Hoosiers or Michelin PS2 Sport Cups, but they'll last longer than either of the aforementioned.

In addition to the two options outline above, your third of the three most common options is 18" CCW's. You need to decide now how much you want to spend and just how much grip/tire longevity you desire.

If max performance is not the goal I feel the PS2's on stock wheels makes the most sense.

Whatever is the lightest! I would definitely recommend forged wheels for track use.

I'm on my second set of Cup tires mounted to factory Cup wheels, I like how consistent and predictable they are. They are a run flat tire too which adds some safety. You can drive to and from the track too...

More important than your tire/wheel selection is a proper alignment, otherwise you are waisting your money!

Lots of people have destroyed r-comp rubber early!

The only thing I have seen faster at the track than a ZR1 on Sport Cups are full blown race cars. Those Ariel Atoms are pretty fast too if the monkey behind the wheel knows how to drive it....

@Californiapch

Nice videos! Thank you for sharing.

What is the rattling sound I hear at the end of each of your videos?

By the way, nice recovery in your 1st run.

I have a rattle in some of my videos..... might be the mic that I plug into the gopro. Or maybe the housing - I will be diagnosing it one day to try find it.

Actually, I have a sunglass holder on the passenger visor ( and my garage door opener ) ..... it was not clicked closed.... maybe it is that making the noise.

OOPS, no loose articles while running.... haha.

California, does the car not throw a fit when you're running without the TPMS sensors? I thought it would go into lockdown mode if it didn't detect the sensors?

I usually trailer the car but I had my trailer sandblasted and painted... not ready yet.

I takes 3/4 of my round trip ( 20-25 miles round trip ) for the light to come on...... mainly on the way home from the event.

once I put the stock rubber back on... light goes off. All fine.

My buddy does the same thing...... on his Z06..... said it was fine after.

Lockdown maybe with no key fob...... but seems ok with no sensors.

I do have an extra set of sensors for my race rims.... but my Corvette buddy said not to worry... saved me buying a reset tool.

Brian, thanks for the info. I thought I understood you couldn't turn off active handling when there was a TPMS issue. What traction mode do you run in at the track?

I run both off

active handling off

traction control off

Now, the tire sensor warning was not lit yet. It came on half way home.

Though I ran with both on the first run but there was that white stuff the police put down for training.... wanted to see how things were the first run.

When I trailer I will just drive and off the trailer.

CCW's or Forgelines for the track.

Californiapch, I would probably not be too comfortable running reproduction wheels with R-Compounds or slicks. Putting around town ok, pushing it on a track.....you might want to keep an eye out on things. Plus with them being powder coated it's going to be hard to check for cracks, just something to think about.

Yes, I have thought about that. I will watch them.

I used AFS replica's for 10 years racing and everything was fine.

More than likely everything will be fine it's just when it comes to the replica wheels frankly who knows how they are made. I'm sure that they will stand up to normal street use just fine but having watched your video's we can probably both agree that you are probably stressing them more in one outing than a normal driver would do in a year on the street lol! To me though wheels are not the place to take risks because if you think about it each one of those lower priced wheels is covering a $1500 brake disk and an $800 caliper and keeping your $115k car off the ground.

Keep your eye out on the for sale thread as there are some smoking deals that come up on there. Just a few days ago there was a guy selling some near new CCW C14's in 18x11 and 18x13 with good Hoosiers on there and brand new spacers for the front wheel for the ZR1 for something like $2600 which is a steal. Going with 18" will also bring your future tire costs down a bit saving you more money and also give you a larger selection of tires that you could run.
