Default are after market exhausts a waste of money?

I put this in the technical forum yesterday and got no response.

Been trying to decide which exhaust system to get for my Z06. Lotsa threads on the forum. I decided to do a base line test of the stock system. Hooked up a gauge to the exhaust pipe between the cat and muffler to see how much back pressure there was. Sure enough the pressure reading was pretty much linear with rpm. Just under 1" at idle up to 7-8" pressure at 6000 rpm. But here's the shocker. With the the bi-mode exhaust valve open there was ZERO back pressure at any rpm. The gauge didn't even twitch. So what's the big deal with after market exhaust systems? Exclusive of headers and cats of course. Have there been any tests with actual numbers showing an increase in power or decrease in 1/4 mile times?

My Corsa sports sound like pure sex at 3k RPM ( stock crate motor with LG headers, no cats ).... that sound is worth it. I have electric cutouts ( QTP's ) and I rather hear that sex noise at 3k RPM any day!

I will say, the Corsa's are rather heavy and I do want that weight gone....grrrrrr

In a word, volume. There're many members who enjoy a much louder exhaust, don't mind drone a whit. Then there're those like me, the bimodal's fine.

The sound alone is worth the $$$. Also, your test is flawed. With the tranny in neutral, and the motor revved up to 6000, there isn't nearly as much exhaust volume passing through the mufflers compared to 6000 in 3rd gear at full throttle. This is when to check for exhaust system pressure. Compare your throttle openings between the two scenarios.

Sound, looks, or weight savings. Some of the aftermarket ones drop ~30lbs off the rear of the car. That is decent. So you could say it helps performance but not power.

As for power just from flowing better, not really.

Sound alone is worth the money to most. Also remember that the Z06 exhaust shrinks down to 2.5" inside the muffler, while some aftermarket exhausts offer a full 3" piping

My Corsa Sports, which I love BTW, have NO DRONE!!! The problem with the stock system, with the flaps open, is the drone which at around 1500 RPM is intolerable, at least to me and the wife. But for HP gains, not worth it to go aftermarket unless you change the whole path.

Chev exhaust sound always sucks even back to the 50's no matter what you use, if you want a cool sound you got to step down to a ford.

Yes sir ! thats the ticket - some cherrybombs for the z06 in red. They will look great hanging off the a$$ of a Z06. It will match the red calipers and look like baboon hemorhoids!

With my mods in my sig and the stock mufflers.. The sound when the flaps open is amazing! I think it's the best sound I've ever had in a car.

This.

If sound is really important, they are worth it. If someone does not really care to much if the car is loud, or has some special exhaust note, then no, not worth it.

It's all about each person's personal taste and priority with the car. Simple as that. Each person too has their own preference in which exhaust is the best sounding, there is no right or wrong answer. Many like the Corsa's..I don't I prefer the sound of a Borla or BB PRT or even B&B Bullets

I run the stingers- def a good sound and lighter. The Corsa's are awesome. I just heard Jason from Katech put the new lighter corsa system on and saved 12lbs

I'm in the process of getting mine together. I'm doing it strictly for the sound of it all...

They only act as noise makers not enough horse power gain for the money. Npp is the answer for more noise. That is stock z06 or zr1 mufflers.
