Default Can someone explain why the ZR1 is so heavy

Seriously with all the carbon parts on the car and a smaller motor and lighter brakes how is the damn thing heavier than a Z06!!!

Next what can I do to free some weight up? Is there an absurd amount of sound deadening or something?

I'd be surprised that they're lighter since they're a lot bigger.

I believe they weigh about 10lbs less per corner. The supercharger adds a lot of weight and the engine is just smaller in displacement, not weight.

Realistically what ~200lbs with fluids. With the lighter brakes, roof, halo, and hood we should be closing the gap a lot more.

Part of it is due to beefed up diff, axles etc to handle the power.

Soooooo lets just say the diff is internal parts so that won't really add much weight. By axles I am assuming you are referring to the halfshafts. If thats the case I am tempted to say they can't be much beefier than the ones of the C5Z.

Realistically its just the blower, intercooler, heat exchanger. They shouldn't be adding that much weight to offset the lightweight parts.

It's not "just" those. You've got the supercharger plumbing as noted, plus the beefed up drivetrain that was also mentioned (yes, the parts are heavier). The brake calipers are heavier. The wheels and tires are as well.

All of these things do add up and make a difference.

I think wheel weight increase over a C6Z06 is about 38lbs approx.
Weight of the braking setup should kinda be null with the CC rotors with bigger calipers?
The supercharger/intercooler/plumming,heat exchanger, pulleys 95-105lbs atleast
The rear diff case and few little things inside of the trans/diff say 5-8lbs
I think the magnetic ride adds some weight gonna guess around 35lbs
bigger sumped oil tank than the 08 and earlier Z06's w/fluid
thicker sway bars is a guess?

I can attest to the fact that there is NOT an abundance of sound deadening.

So you guys are saying that the ZR1 has even a beefier diff than the Z06, which is already larger than the other models.

The engine itself is heavier, too. "Bigger" displacement just means they drilled a bigger bore for the cylinder. Less material, less weight. LS9 has more robust internal parts, forged crank, etc.

Let's not forget about the blower itself.

Practically nearly all ZR1's come with the 3ZR packages (which adds some weight) compared to mostly 2LZ packages on the Z06.

Overall, I'm glad GM built the ZR1 more robust. Comparing it to other front (mid) engine cars with similar size and drivetrain it is actually pretty light.

That is my understanding. The halfshafts are also heavier.
