[Z06] z06 on fire
#41
My apologizes to you - however - I still don't see how jumping the battery caused it. That
was my B.S. call. The cause - as the original post suggested it was caused by boosting
the battery.
Sorry for your loss in any event, hope you are able to have it all repaired.
And, since I first read this on another board, with your permission I'll post your reply there - to clear up
the mystery and the all guessing going on there.

Ronald,
I am so sorry to hear about your Vette. That is horrible. I will be in Amsterdam this April. My wife and I generally do not have much room in our luggage. If there is anything that is kind of small that is tough for you to get for your Z06 repair, please let me know. If at all possible, I will try and bring it for you.

I can hardly express how much I appreciate the offer that you made.
I hope, and more or less expect, that my Z06 is up and running again by that time.
I also wish you and your wife a nice stay in Amsterdam!

You have my permission to post my reply on another board. Let's hope that it will prevent other owners to end up in the situation like I did.
Which board will it be, if I may ask?

Sure - it's www.chirpthird.com - started years ago for Camaro SS owners. It's grown
since then, but a great place for GM fans to hang out. Lots of Camaro owners, Vette
guys and generally nice people. Not really a motor head place, more like family folks
who like cars. Once again, my apologies - did not mean to dis you or cast aspersions,
just did not understand how boosting could cause an engine fire.

Looking at the pictures you have under the hood, is it possible for the valve breather you have installed, where the fire occurred, to have been spitting out oil over time for some reason? Maybe there was oil residue and a spark from the jump caused it to catch near the fuel rail. I'm not sure though. Your car is amazing! I hope to do up my interior as well as you did yours. Best of luck!

PS: Not that I like it that it ever happened to me, but you know what I mean

So yeah, it definitely sucks that Ronald's Z06 caught fire (really, the only think I can think of to spur something like that is a fuel leak), but when dealing with the internet... you really need to have a thicker skin regarding other peoples' opinions on the matter.
Best of luck with getting the car back in operating shape!

Ronald,
So sorry for the damage to your Z.
Hope you have it back in shape soon.
How are the insurance companies in Holland to work with? Sometimes here in the US they can be a pain in the azz. Hopefully you will have a good outcome.
Wishing you the best.

At times, insurance companies are a PITA in my country as well (and in many other countries too, I'm sure).
Although I have a so called 'all risk' insurance policy, my main concern still is the depreciation of the car, at 5+ years of age.
Fortunately, the technical experts who have done the first investigations of the damage have recognized that my Z was in a better than new condition, a fact that can also be backed up by the many photographs that I have kept.
It is also fortunate that, technically speaking, there won't be a problem to restore the car in its original condition. But as far as the financial outcome is concerned, some issues still have to be resolved, I'm afraid ...

Nothing has been confirmed yet about the cause of the fire.
The video that was shot by 'CarSpotterQVS' and some of the pictures that I took myself, both during the incident, have been sent by Moritz Tuning (this is the shop where my Z will be repaired) to FAST however. Moritz is an authorized dealer of FAST, since a year or so. And because I had an LSXr intake manifold and their fuel rails installed, FAST is highly interested in what might have been the cause of the fire.
One thing that the experts (Moritz, FAST) are thinking of, is that there could have been a bad injector. But still ... nothing has been confirmed yet!
