z06 guru's i need your help
Im in the market for a z06, but Im having problems picking out which year. Ive heard stories that 06-07 have a oil consumption problem that i should get 08+. but then again ive heard 08+ have head internals problem. My aim with this car is going to be a track car, fully built inside and out. But I plan on keepin the motor stock a long while and play around with suspension/tire/brake setups. So Im begging your magic gods of the corvette skys help this young noob with the great vette. I need something that will hold up, Im rev happy thanks everyone!

a) go with the newest, lowest mileage you can afford.
b) If you can get one within the 3/36 warranty, do it then get GMPP
(or if it has GMPP transfer it, extended it etc)
c) get one with the most left on the powertrain warranty
d) get an extended warranty that covers the engine and possibly powertrain.
Not much else fails that is expensive on these cars other than parts of the powertrain.
Everything else can be fixed here with a little advice, a little wrenching and internet ordered parts.
Been here a while and haven't seen any complaints about oil consumption on 06-07. Haven't seen anything specific to 08+ on head internals problems.
There was a range Jan - Jun of 07 for rocker arm failures (needle bearings fall out) but this usually isn't catastrophic, just noisy and fix-before-driving again.
There seem to be a lot of valve related failures from 06-08, hence my warranty advice.
Not much else of any concern

JedBlanks is correct. I would go 08+ since they use the stronger TR6060 trans. The 06-07 is still pretty good being the t56. The 6060 has slightly befier internals and low gear syncros. 09 saw an increase in size of the dry sump oil capacity. If you are building it I'd prefer to start with the 6060 instead of the 56. Hope this helps.

extended warr. is totally on my mind to have. I was already planning on upgrading the oil system to ARE. im trying to find a black 08 for under45k i wont go higher then that.

The tr6060 would be one of the last reasons I bought newer. There is simply nothing wrong with the t56, it handles the ls7 fine. For what you are planning on doing, if you decide to buy an 06 07 or 08, I would recommend upgrading the dry sump resevoir. As others have said, try to get a powertrain warranty, an ls7 is a pricey engine.

for 45 you can probably get an 08 with some miles.. So I would get newest you could afford.

Get the newest C6 Z, ideally 2009 or newer, with the least amount of mileage and best shape and service history that you can find, with the most GM or GMPP warranty on it!
It is also VERY interesting to note that there has been only 1 reported valve train failure on a 2009 or newer C6 Z, and personally I think GM did something to correct the problem on the 2009 and newer Zs.

Although it's definitely an upgrade that provides for a more reliable engine, I'm sure GM will frown upon it if the LS7 goes south.

well its gonna be a track beast. im going to cage it (scca approved) and drop 2 buckets in there to start with. then move on to suspension (LG, pfad, or kw v3 or clubsport) as well as sways and camber arms. get some 17s after that (ccw..... but they r heavy as funk! need to find something lighter). corner balance after that. then ill start playing with aero (apr gtc500, zr1 pieces all around) then last would be the motor.

I've owned my 06'Z since 5-06', many HPDE miles, no engine/oil consumptions problems. Nothing wrong with an 06'. Go for the best value on your $; you are going to spend a whole lot more on your mods.
CCW one piece alum wheels are significantly lighter than stock, my set-up with Hoosier r-6 are 10 Lbs less per corner than the stock set-up.
