Find a ZR1 to drive and then decide. The Z07 is nice but the ZR1 is KING

I was also skeptical of the ceramic rotors and the adjustable suspension
- too much complication. And now when I see the posts on the zr1 forum
of many zr1 owners complaining about mysterious vibration problems -
and the ceramic rotors are suspect of causing this while GM would never
admit this. - I would be very upset if I were driving down the road in my 115k
car at 70mph and the steering wheel oscillated back and forth like my College
girl-friend's Nissan Sentra.
But keep in mind that this issue has either been resolved in most cases thus far, or
hasn't been an issue at all in the vast majority of ZR1s.
I'm going to point out the obvious here and say that the history of problems with
the LS7s would scare me much more than a slight vibration in the 70-75 mph range
on "some" ZR1s that have been addressed successfully by competent technicians.

Zr1-lite - all elements of the z06 with the supercharged LS9 or LS7 owners can store their factory LS7's for safe keeping and install one of these :

When I buy something I really like, I tend to hang on to it. When my Z06 is out of warranty - I am seriously considering this Swap.

I feel the same. In fact I loved my '08 Z and had every intention of keeping it for life, but there too many things that persuaded me to make the jump.
The ZR1 is an upgrade from my Z06 in every way except the same interior, just as it was an upgrade from my C5Z to my C6Z.
The difference now with the C6Zs is that you can get everything the ZR1 has except the LS9 which drives the price very close to ZR1 territory. The price of admission to the ZR1 is essentially less than the cost of an LS9...well worth it for many including me.
C6Z is a great car that I will own again one day....but only in addition to my ZR1.

I had an '08 Z06 as well.
I wish that I had the ZR1 sooner, it's an awesome car.
The Z06 was great, the ZR1 is awesome. Better balance, more power, much better torque feel

Had a Z (like many here). Now have a ZR. Much better car. The Z is no slouch; it's just the ZR is simply more car.

I'm going to pop in with the novice perspective.
I am waiting delivery of my first vette. I was fortunate to find a local dealership with both a Z06 w/ Z07 package and a ZR1. I'll admit that I went in biased toward the Z06 based on $ and the fact that I'd never exceed the limits of a Z06.
I drove the Z06 and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I decided to drive the ZR1 for giggles. I was shocked at the difference in ride and the ear to ear grin on my face; I ordered my 2012 ZR1 the same day.
As my wife said, in her infinite wisdom, you only live once - get the ZR1.

If you are really honest with yourself nobody needs a Z06 or a ZR1. Unless of course you spend an awful lot of time at the local race track. And that is a very small audience on this forum. The main reason people buy the Z06 or ZR1 is because they can and they want something above the ordinary car. Its called bragging rights.

I have a Z06 and had a Z51 coupe previously. I could have bought a ZR1. I wanted something different. I do not use the Z06 anywhere near its potential and a very high percentage of us that have either car are the same. That being said the only reason we have them is because they are available, we can afford it, and we want it. There is no logic to it because nobody NEEDS a 500+ HP car. If you can't get your head around that fact and admit it you have a problem.

In fact there's nobody on this forum that really NEEDS a 400+ HP car.
That means that all Corvettes beyond the C1s probably shouldn't exist because there really is no need for that kind of power.
Bring back the 6 cylinder C1s!!!!....
Sorry, not trying too hard to be a wise azz but your "logic" really doesn't seem to exist.

Cmon Deb,all he said was there available,we can afford it and we want it.It may be a blanket statement but it's 100% accurate.Personally I wish I could add "for the track" but as I stated before there's no track close by.That ill be 1 order of ego and 2 orders of bragging rights to go please!!!

If you are worried about the LS7 blowing up, I ask this. If it does blow, you *may* be out 14 or so K. Now on the ZR1, you are going to have to come up with an additional 50K to get into that car.
The thing about the ZR1 is that it upps the ante all the way around on a Z06 (the standard one). You are talking more $$, more performance, and yet, higher cost of consumables.
This is not a problem if you don't track the ZR. All the carbon fiber pieces also cost $$ if they get broken. It's just that much more exotic than the Z06.
If you want to make yourself decide to get it, I'm sure all you have to do is test drive one and then the decision is probably easy if $$ is not a problem. You will have the top dog Corvette for a while. Hopefully, at that price, GM does not surpass it within a few years. That is always the risk if you buy for prestige.
Either car is fantastic, no doubt. If I could afford the ZR I would go with that. In the end, it's "just" $$.
Good luck with either decision.

Z06 compared to ZR1
This is a good thread to get going on.,Road and Track tested all corvettes from mild to wild.volume 63 number 8.just recieved it in the mail. They tested standered corvette, grand sport,Z06 and ZR1.
The CR-6 was included in the test
The engineers preferred the Z06 overall due to its 50/50 balance on track, and the big block feel and power. .
The ZR1 may have been quicker at the Nurburgring, but Tommy Milner was about 1 sec. faster around spring mountain in the ZO6 than in the ZR1.
CR6 first 55 car lengths ahead Z06 , 7 cars back ZR1 ,Grand Sport 26 lengths regular corvette 59 lengths .
Z06 took the track compition hands down. The CR6 is the corvette that won at Lemans
on the straight 1/4 mile Z06 11.7 ZR1 11.5
for 30.000- more I cant see if the money is worth it
i have the Z06 always wondered if the difference is worth it.
Ther is a lot of testing info for all corvette owners Road and Track is a must for all of us get the magazine Great stuff. let the thread begin.
Thanks Richard Truman Milton Delware
