Default z06 reverse syncho problem at the dealer now, any idea of cost?

I have a feeling this is going to hurt. The dealer just called me and told me that I have reverse synchromesh issues with the transmission.

When I put in the clutch and put it into reverse you could feel the stick bouncing a bit and giving resistance, then it would "clunk" into gear and lurch the car backwards. Kinda scary. It didn't do it all the time, but just started. Only happened once or twice.

I took it in ASAP so that I didn't do any other damage. I'm kinda worried now and so is my wallet.

Anyone else had this issue?

I didn't think reverse was syncroed. You mean reverse lockout solenoid? If so that is a quick/easy swap to put in a new one.

Dealer said "yes there is a problem" Most likely the synchro's and yes there is a definite problem with the reverse gear.

They are doing the open heart surgery now. (wish me luck )

I'm not exactly a gearhead so my definitions might be a bit off.

It's an 06, I've read the boards but can't find anything exactly the same.

He said if it is the synchro's it'll be close to $2000

I gotta buy new rears this month as well! Damn this is getting expensive.

$2000 sounds about right. When my 4th gear got stuck in my C5 Z I was quoted at $1000 just for removal and reinstall of the tranny. I know it was around $800 for the rebuild kit which included all new synchros. Hopefully since it's just reverse it'll be cheaper. Good luck. These granny's are expensive.

If it is just a reverse lockout solenoid the part is $130 and shouldn't take more than an hour to swap.

If it's the solenoid it's an easy fix. Hopefully if it is this the dealer doesn't remove the transmission just to tell you it's the solenoid.

If it is the reverse solenoid what symptoms would that be?

The most common problems are not being able to shift into reverse without a lot of force. I've seen where this is intermittent. From what you described that might not be it but I've got my fingers crossed.

It's the sync gear bearing, had the same problem at 110,000 they backdated the repair and did it under warranty. How many miles do you have, was advised to always make sure car is stopped before shift for the future.

Not sure when 5 year powertrain warranty first came out. You should check to see if you are covered under warranty. I had the same problem with my 08 Z06. at first it would grind going into reverse. then it eventually wouldn't go into reverse anymore. Dealer had to replace synchro. Apparently reverse and 6th gear are same synchro. Soon after replacing reverse-6th synchro, 3rd-4th synchro went bad and car went back in but this time they gave me a new tranny.

With my 07 I missed the deadline on getting new tranny so they replaced all the bearings and main shaft. Gears looked like new even after 110K miles so were left alone.

We've done a few for the same issue. I just checked a repair order from a couple months back. We replaced the reverse gear, synchro, upgraded blocker ring, a few misc bearings and fresh fluid. The total repair was $1,887 with labor, parts and tax.

29k miles, no warranty.

5 year warranty didn't start till later years. I think it had a 3/36k but it's now 5 years old. I don't know what to do. Any advice?

"technically" it should be a warranty claim but it's past the year. Anyone I could call to pull strings?

Are you the original owner and do you have a service history / good relationship with the dealer it's sitting at?

Shhhhhh, GM Cust Service is watching. Your dealer will be turned in and will lose it's license (just kidding I hope).

Nope, second owner, picked it up at 11k about a year and a half ago.

I've used the same dealership for a few repairs and all oil changes but I don't know if they would get me much pull.

They have the only zr1 certified technician in the entire region there, that's why I take it there. Someone that actually knows what in the hell they are doing.

Why not ask the service writer if he could see if GM would help on the repair? The worst thing that could happen is they could say no.

Did you get the problem resolved?? If so, what was the cause of it?? I have a 06 that's doing something very similar to your problem. It only happens every once in a while, usually when the car is warm. It requires a little bit of force to get in reverse, then there's a loud "cluck" with a bit of grinding, and the speedo pops up to about 70mph. I figured at first that the car may have been rolling a little but I made sure that the car was completing stopped the next time and it still does it. Any thoughts??
