Default Should I ger a new ignition for my Z06?

I had my car in the shop yesterday getting new sneakers put on when one of the mechanics mentioned to me that I should get an MSD ignition/plugs in order to get rid of the gasoline smell and leakage dripping from my exhaust. He said it would increase HP, improve fuel efficiency and burn that extra gas. I looked on the MSD webpage and they did not list an ignition for a C6 Z06. I have never had anyone ever mention that before nor do I know much about them. Can anyone educate me on what these do and whether or not it is neccesary/beneficial?

The mods on my car include:
Kooks headers and x-pipe
Comp Cam
Cold Air intake
custom tune

I dont have the specs of the cam on me right now but the the car lopes a LOT and does smell of gas when iddling.

MSD has Blaster Packs for the LS7. however your mechanic is a novice at best.

with your mods the factory ignition modules are more then sufficient.
instead of 1 spark, the MSD's will give you 3 sparks. maybe giving you a slightly cleaner burn. as far as HP goes, you will see no difference.

Do you have cats on those headers? That and the lopey cam is where your low RPM smell comes from. its not an issue that I would spend $500 to change.

More than anything else you need a new mechanic as the gas smell is a tuning issue and the stock ignition is more than sufficient.

... and just ONE more reason why more of you guys should do your own work.

Ive seen LS block cars pushing 1000hp on stock wires and packs... i think you are fine.

If you're getting work done at a "performance shop", they're just trying to sell you something you don't need.

MSD does make some good stuff. I've seen their PCM in race cars. They remove just about every computer in a C6 (except for the EBCM for ABS) and replace just the PCM with an MSD unit so they don't need any fob, they go to mechanical door releases, and won't have any TPMS issues. But - that's on a track only car.

For your mods, stick with the stock ingition system.

The more your mechanic talks, the more I'm convinced he should stick to tires

You know what happens when LSX guys pull there coils for MSD coils right? Some other boosted car buys then converts over to coil packs and has no proble running 1000 hp + with LSX stock coils. . Save your money....

MSD seems to have a reliability problem with the LS coils for some reason

you don't need it.
Only place the aftermarket has now is for older stuff. For instance I run MSD box, coil and dist on my 69 Camaro, because it is vastly better than points and stock coil. I've never felt/smell or seen any differences between a box with multiple sparks and one without... I've seen a vast improvement over a stock HEI distributor that just breaks out past 5k and I've seen differences between cheap wires and good ones...but with today's ignition on our vettes, individual coils, short wires...there's nothing aftermarket that's worth the $.
