Aftermarket shifter rattle
I purchased my car about a month ago and it has the hurst aftermarket shifter on it. The shift **** rattles in each gear at full throttle. I've been trying to find a fix for this but haven't had much luck. The only thing I was able to find was that a few people who went with the MGW said it didn't rattle at all.
Does anyone have any experience with this shifter and have a quick fix for it? I'll try anything before going back to the stock shifter box.
Thanks

My Z06 with the MGW shifter has a slight rattle on initial start but once it's warmed up it almost always goes away. MGW is about 30 minutes from me and the owner even told me I might experience a slight rattle (I had one previously in my 05 LPE coupe). Now this rattle isn't in the shift **** itself though, it's in the actual shifter. MGW's new shift **** is great and is a perfect fit/feel for their shifter.

I have a 2007 Z, and the original shifter "rattled". There was a TBS out and they (GM) replaced the shifter with a newer model in late 2008. That shifter was quiet. Then I got the MGW (NEW model) early last year (2009). I absolutely love it, and would not go back no matter how much noise it made. BUT, it does vibrate/buzz under heavy acceleration when cold. I took it all apart and put in the std C-6 shift box, and that made for some improvement, but it did not go away.
I would love it if there was a QUICK FIX for this, but I have not heard of one yet. Some have used a heavy shift ****, and that solved their problem. I like the stock ****, so I haven't done that. Most of the summer it is just fine, but in the early Spring and late Fall when it is cold outside, it buzzes.
I think it depends on the individual car whether it makes noise or not. Some (mine), must transmit more vibration thru the shift linkage than others. I wish there is some way I could dampen that to reduce the vibration, but it would take someone with more technical knowledge than I posses.
I have been following the MGW shifter issue for a long time, and MOST cars do just fine with the new model and C-6 box.
Good Luck!

I have not been successful in getting rid of the rattle in mine.
I have the lastest MGW shifter, new std C6 shifter assembly which replaces the Z06 assembly, and a Leopard heavy shifter **** and it still rattles under hard acceleration.
It seems temperature has a direct effect as the intensity of the rattle diminishes with heat.
Always open to suggestions ?

My experience with the MGW shifter is as follows.
Stock shifter never rattled in my 2008.
Installed MGW shifter, new design, and a C6 shifter box in the summer. No rattles. As soon as the temperature went below 55 F plenty of rattles.
Removed MGW shifter, reinstalled stock shifter, no rattles at any temperature including last winter at 15 F.
Sold MGW shifter. End of story.

The MGW is noisy as hell.Their answer was buy there upgraded one, I thought mine was? Or buy a C6 shifter and box for 135.00.It amazes me the products people sell us that aren't rt and want us to spend more $ to make them rt.The Shifter works perfect. But the noise sucks. The C6 box didn't work either.

Used to miss shifts prior to the installation of an MGW. My priority is no missed shifts. If you're posing on the street, stay with the stock shifter. If it matters, ie. on the track, go with MGW.
I really don't care if it rattles. It's only under acceleration and it's a "race car with a radio" anyway.
As to customer service, I've received better customer service from George than from GM.

RPM Motors in Santa Clarita installed a C5 threaded Hurst **** after they cut 1/2" off and threaded my 07Z's stock shift rod. If your Z was bought used maybe it has one of the Hurst ***** that Pipedreams sold with an insert to fit on a stock unthreaded shift rod causing it to rattle.
Happily mine never rattles.

I have had this problem as well and just found a great fix! I purchased some 3/8 tube foam that is designed to wrap around your water pipes and cut a piece and placed it around the shifter between the **** and the base and taped it tight with electrical tape. Absolutely no rattle or noise now!!! Try it!

The Hurst is great shifter. MGW can't be any better. It just the noise.
The Hurst shifts short and quick!
