California sux... need paint options
Ok, so I have a few cars in my garage. I don't do bras (pun intended) so they get rock chips. I usually have the front clips painted every year and a half or so. My '01 Coupe has had the nose painted 3 times already and my Z once.
I go to my paint guy that I haven't seen in awhile and tell him that I have waited a bit too long and need the front clips painted on my 4 cars. What I usually pay $700+/- now costs $2,500! Everything has to be blended from the bumper through the fenders including the hood. I thought my guy was nuts so I went to a couple of other places and was told the same thing.
You see, in the infinate wisdom of CARB, no one can use VOC laden paint as of Jan 1st. Everything is done in water base paint now. Only the clear can have slight traces of VOCs. A buddy told me to take off the front clips and send them out of state for paint. Not a bad idea.
What say CF Z06 section?
Needing paint:
'01 C5 front fascia (black)
'06 Z06 front fascia (M Silver)
'89 IROC lower air dam (OEM red)
'05 Silverado SS front bumber cover (black)

Good luck on the match. We have a great painter here and that water based crap is a PITA. I just converted my truck to a Silverado SS front clip and the paint was the worst part. We did it without blending, but it took a couple practice runs. It ended up good and it looks like factory paint eventhough it was not easy. The water based will not lay as smooth at first, but once you get it right, it will pop like the old stuff. You can't tell the hood and bumper were the only parts painted. The fenders were not sprayed.

Hey, stopped in to see you in Rio Vista (ABLE) on Sat Nov.6th. You were not there-hope to meet you some other time. Went to the Sand Crane festival in Lodi. It turned out to be a good destination for a ride.

Oh Rich, anyone can match black To the op, maybe but the stuff you need in Nevada and spray it yourself in your garage. Afterwards, get a clear bra. Mostly invisible but really works. Good luck.

Yeah right, black is a major biotch. Sometimes it has brown, gray, yellow or even blue tints in it. I wish it was easy.

I see it says you don't do Bras. I'm with you on that but I do enjoy un-doing bras.
For what it's worth: A Venture seal clear bra is nearly invisible and has been a great investment for me. I won't buy a new sports car again and not get a venture seal clear bra.... Good luck. Nick

Man I know there are a few on the board that dont like the stuff but I have 3M on the front of my car. 24K and it looks like the day it left Bowling Green. I'm a believer.

I have an Invisiguard clear bra and it has one of the best investments for the Z. Put it on my ML500 after seeing the results on the Z.
