Default Broke Torx Head Inside Caliper Pin !!!

So instead of loosening I tightened and the Torx head sheared off inside the Torx fitting at the head of the Caliper pin. The end is pretty much flush with the head of the pin. Nothing to grab onto. And it has one track day on it incase that makes a difference. I tried some WD40 and a small screw driver but could not dislodge it.

Would appreciate any tips on getting it out.

I have discovered that taking the whole caliper off to change pads is not that big of a deal. I don't really have a choice right now

If that Torx is wide enough I would try drilling a hole in the center and try to tap a screw into it so it grabs enough to pull it out.

Good luck .

I've never done that and don't have the tool. Also it is a little tight in there.

All you need is a 3/8 cordless drill, a High Speed Steel bit and 2"-3" self tapping screw.

So like 5/16 inch diameter self tapping screw. The end of the Torx head is about 1/4 inch into the head. I just thought the head was very hard and would be difficult to get the drill bit started

another reason to just take the 2 bolts off the back of the caliper instead of messing with those crappy pins in the caliper

How thick is the Torx section that broke off? I would start as small as possible. Depending on the hardness of the Torx bit that snapped, it might take some time drilling the hole. You will need a Metal Cutting Bit.

just went out to the garage and checked for you and yes it does fit. the other thing is have you considered putting a little slit in the part that broke off with a dremel so you try to get at it with a screw driver?

i have used this procedure in other similar situations and it sometimes works but it is a delicate procedure. and remember you can always cut more. start of small and if you need to make the slit deeper take it a little at a time till the screwdriver gets a bite.

Actually I don't have a dremmel

I think drilling (I do have one of those) will be what I try.

I was thinking of trying to cement (JB Weld) something to it and then pull it out ....

Do a search for an Easy Out Bit. Sears sells them. Might even find one in a tap and dye set. Usually used on busted off screw heads but it might be worth a try in your case.
Good Luck.

There are a couple good ideas here. But before you go drilling and cutting, you might wanna try a mechanics magnet. It might be enough to pull that sheared piece out, with a little wiggling. If that works, you dont have to go find yourself a new torx bolt.

First things first,

You have torx tools and no Dremel? What were you thinking?

Back to the problem at hand. From your description you sheared off the tool inside the torx bolt.

Option 1. A sharp punch applied at an angle reversing the direction you were turning to get the tool "unstuck" then the mechanics magnet to "pluck" it out.

Option 2. Get out your drill and see if you can drill it and use an easy out. The tool may be too hard to drill with basic bits.

Option 3. Go buy the dremel and try the screwdriver trick.

Option 4. Put down the JB weld. The right way of doing this is holding a hex nut over the stuck tool / fastener and using a mig or stick welder to attach the nut to the stuck part.

Happy tinkering,

Ryan

Since you stripped out the Torx fitting going the wrong way, that bolt's gotta be torqued down pretty tight making thing's a lot worse. Think "jersydrew's" Grab-It tool with some heat is your best bet. You can try driving your car around hard on the brake's to heat thing's up, but doubt that will be enough. Look's like it might be torch heat and caliper repainting time. Maybe better to just leave it alone and pull the caliper's for pad changes.
