Dealership News Update On Z06 and ZR1
Today 6-22-09 I dropped off my Z06 to the dealership for routine maintenance when the sales manager came over and told me that within the next 60-90 days GM will be enouncing, that they will no longer be making the Z06 or ZR1.?. Due to the Obama Mileage Standards to 35 MPG. As I was standing there the GM came over took a look at my Z and said, “better hold onto that car”!
Has anyone heard about this?

The impact of the ZO6 and ZR1 on CAFE standards is miniscule. But, the rumor could prove accurate. If so, I expect the criteria will have more to do with cutting the costs of materials and assembly. It would be consistent with policies already announced in streamlining production. At this point, I don't think you can have any confidence in anything stated by either GM, or the government. GM's management will have to make decisions based on an evolving market, and things will change. The government is the wild card, as it has shown little understanding of the business, and I have never known ignorance to be of great value.

With all that keeps changing at GM these days, time will tell if this ever comes to pass.

I have a good dealer friend who told me last week "If you want a performance or big vehicle from GM you need to buy it in the next 12-18 months. After that they won't be available new for any price. Hope he isn't right. I may be keeping the the GM cars I have and never buy another new car.

Dealers don't cr@p about what GM's future is going to hold.
Hell, even after GM announced the slashing of dealerships, none of them knew what to expect until they recieved their overnight parcel from GM stating if they where still part of the network.

I think it's nonsense.
The first factory Chrysler started back up was the Viper line.

Chrysler will soon be making cars again.
Chrysler Group announced Monday that it is restarting a factory, after shutting down all of its manufacturing for nearly seven weeks following the bankruptcy of Chrysler LLC. Chrysler Group is the new company that emerged last week with most of Chrysler's assets and a new ownership structure.
The first plant to reopen is the one that makes the Dodge Viper sports car.
The Viper has a 600 horsepower V-10 engine and a price tag that starts at about $90,000. The Viper was introduced in the 1992 model year, and only 25,000 have been sold since then.
The Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit that makes the car employs 115 people.
Chrysler LLC had announced last year that it intended to sell off the Viper brand. The high-performance, 10-cylinder sports car sells in low numbers. Ultimately, Chrysler said it had not received any bids that met its requirements. Chrysler's other plants remain idle.
"At this time, we cannot give exact timing in regards to the start of production at our other manufacturing facilities," Chrysler Group said in a statement.
The Viper brand and the plant that makes the car, the Conner Avenue assembly plant in Detroit, were taken over by the "new" Chrysler that emerged last week from bankruptcy.
The Chrysler Group is owned by a combination of the Italian automaker Fiat, the United States government, the United Auto Workers union's retiree trust and the Canadian and Ontario governments.

Let me make this very clear. Dealerships do not know any inside information about the fate of GM or it's vehicles. All you're doing is posting their speculation and rumors. You'll find more accurate information on Autoblog.com. They pick up official press releases from GM.

That's a huge reason why General Motors can't seem to getout of it's own way. It keeps crapping on itself. There has and always will be a market for great sports cars, no matter the gas price or mileage rating. The Vette is like Baseball, Football and American Pie. So is the Mustang, etc.
GM like many others were for years in denial of market conditions and buying trends. They got fat at the top, paid hefty bonuses with no performance and labor contracts like the Airlines are making it more difficult to be competitve. They have many products that are duplicated, over produced and some products, well, are just dogs and should be eliminated. This will all eventually correct itself.
So let's not be too quick to "throw the baby out with the bath water" The Vette will live.
