During the last 6 years I have owned two E46 M3's, two Vettes, and now a Porsche 997S. So, I read about the wanna-be-Porsche-owner M3 owners, the red neck Vette owners, and of course, the elitist/wanna-be-Ferrari-owner Porsche owners. I figure, you're either a car enthusiast or, something else. If you are an enthusiast, you probably know more about the car than the folks writing the mag articles. And, you clearly know more than the profilers in my "something else" category. So, I'm going to own the car of my choice that I can afford. I'm going to enjoy the company of similar-minded folks, and the others can languish in their own arrogance and/or stupidity.

The only problem is that unfortunately, most people of means purchase the marque not the car. Not all, of course, so don't flame me, but most. This is evident by the attitudes we see from the editors of magazines too.

I know Vette owners have a propensity to wear gold chains, but consider what the Porsche guys had to deal with.

it doesn't take me long to read thought a article like that. Is the author a professional writer doing an auto test or trying to be a comedian? They just love bashing American cars so when they couldn't find anything, they write trash to bitch about. Shows the mentality of the testers and editor of the rag. Is he there to take a census or test a car and report on it. It beat the Porsche 203 vs 202 so I did read it.

I enjoy being identified as a vette owner and have never owned or worn a gold chain. I specifically do not want to be identified with BMW or Porsche owners as I dislike the image. I will say that I'd love to be identified as an SL500 owner but cannot afford one!

I think magazines play to what they perceive ( or know ) is their primary market. Vette owners have a multitude of special magazines devoted to us alone. That this general audience magazine would say such an uncomplimentary thing ( and then go ahead and rate the car #1) just says that they don't have a clue regarding the kind of serious people who own them.

It's just my opinion and I own 'only' the base C6. However, it has never seen a gold chain. I don't think vette owners are pretentious....proud of their cars sure but not pretentious. BMW and Porsche owners though are a different story IMO.

I've got it. Vette owners aren't pretenious and are open minded but nobody else is? Extrapolating on that, if everybody owned a Corvette the world would be a better place.

A few guiding principles:

There are heroes and villians in every car community and club. Much of the Porsche and Corvette owner stereotype is deserved but both are improving.

Car magazines, especially C/D and Automobile are more oriented toward colorful language than factual summaries.

The Z06 has received so much praise in every forum that I think the right to whine about a throwaway remark is lost. Just read the Corvette only magazines if you're that thin skinned.

I think the magazine was referring to the gold chains, earings and piercings (ouch!) that are dislodged from the stunned passengers due to the Z06's massive G's.

Stereo types can be very misleading. Let's have some fun here and describe what you think our brothers look like in the world of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche and I bet you'd be off the mark. Keep in mind Corvette owners wear gold chains.

If Vette owners are noted for wearing gold chains, what icons of the other sports car owners noted for? Are F car, Lambo, Bimmer, Benz, and other toy owners have a similar rep?

I especially like the reference to certain 'types' as "That Corvette and Rolex riff-raff."

That picture looks vaguely like a conga line at our outsourced call center! Must have been Ferrari appreciation day!

The stereo type for Lamborghini owners: Shirt unbottoned down to the mid chest. OK, who's next?

The car won the comparison, they didn't do it as a favor. So we don't have to be grateful or something. Lame C&D writer!
To me the gold chain remark is totally out of place. GM should protest at least, but I guess they don't care...
