$100,000 Corvette due out in 2009
GM's bigger, badder Corvette to launch in 2009
Super-Vette confirmed, report says

It looks like Chevrolet has a souped-up 'Vette in the works after all. After months of rumors, speculation, and phony pictures, word is that GM has confimed a 600 horsepower, limited-edition Corvette will hit showrooms in summer of 2009, according to a recent Automotive News report.
It is expected that in addition to a 95 horsepower boost over the current Z06 model, the limited-edition car will feature styling changes and a near-$100,000 price tag, although pricing has not yet been confirmed. General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has been in support of a more powerful Corvette since Chrysler debuted its 600 horsepower 2008 Dodge Viper at Detroit earlier this year.
"There is a distinct appetite for something beyond the Z06 in performance, beyond the Z06 in exclusivity and beyond the Z06 in price," Lutz is reported to have said last week.
There is no word yet on how many of the limited-edition Corvettes will be produced, but you can bet it will be fewer than the 3,000 Z06s that are built annually.

I personally don't think there's any doubt of this since the new, naturally-aspirated, 600 hp / 560 ft-lbs torque Viper was formally introduced. You have to keep-up with the Jones'.
I wonder if the supposedly confirmed Corvette uber-car will have a DOD engine?

Not like I plan on buying it or being able to afford it if they have DOD I would hope that can be tuned out. I know DOD seems the way the future is headed but some of us like all our horses all the time. I can't imagine both DOD & CAGS on the same car

My opinion is that the Corvette does not compete with the Viper, certainly not in quality or comfort. Just how many of those do they sell per year, that Corvette is gonna compete with?
I'm all for better and better Corvettes, but to spend the valuable dollars on this vs. an improved base Corvette or Z Corvette is not a good thing. To put it in racing, and WIN, that's a good thing.
Money is not in great supply at GM. I say better to marshal the resources they've got and make the best possible products they can that will compete with real targets. GTOs that look like Hondas, SUVs like Aztec that look like Martians, don't cut it. The new cars are better, but that doesn't mean GM is out of the woods.
My 2cents.

6,272 = Z06 production for 2006
You can look up all of the production numbers for each year by model and options at this website;

Historically speaking, especially in the last 10 years, whenever a company makes a limited production HIGH PERFORMANCE exotic car, they come out profitable.
Look at the Enzo Ferrari, Porsche Carrera GT, FORD GT, Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari F50....I could go on and on.
When you make something limited production and exclusive, the price tag grows a LOT and every single one sells. It's a good way for GM to make a quick buck while making publicity around the world also. (as if GM needs more publicity)

Every manufacturer must have a halo vehicle. Look at Nissan - when they quit building their Z buyers quit taking them seriously. When they reintroduced the 350Z they could begin to sell their sedans as well.
The only thing wrong with the Vette it that it's too inexpensive. It's not exclusive enough. There are over a million of them on the road. Do you ever go out for a drive and not pass by one? You don't have to flame me, I love them. I bought one and plan to another soon. But it often goes unnoticed because it's domestic and plentiful. I believe the only reason people tolerate the reliability problems with Ferrari's is because they are exclusive. There are other good looking cars, other fast cars, which fail to sell.

If GM thinks it will sell 1k units it will be a limited edition of 1k units, if they think they can sell 3k a year it will be a limited edition of 3k units. Limited edition mean nothing these days. Lets see GM limit them to 547 units like they did with the GNX. It will not be too much of a collectable when they make 9k units over 3 years and 8k of them are bough by collectors.

I was just thinking about this the other day. In the DC metro area, the answer is overwhelmingly YES. It obviously occurs less often during the warmer months, but in commuting for work 50 miles a day in traffic, I may go quite a few days without seeing a Vette. As far as numbers, I probably see about as many Porsches on the road. On the flip side, I'm lucky to see a Viper every 2-3 months!!!
