Default March 2007 Car & Driver... HARDCORE

Z06 owners are going to love this issue.

I wish they'd've included a Viper in the test. Even the 06 Viper runs similar laptimes to the Z06. The Z06 beat out the GT3 (on Sport Cups) and an Exige S (also on R's).. '08 will be an interesting year.

the z06 porked up to 3180lbs... 50lbs heavier than last year... 3 of those pounds are from the roof .

They also said that the shocks have been revised for '07, and it's no longer the 7:43 nürburgring car.

Z06 11.8@122. Exige S 12.8@107. GT2 12.0@118. Ariel Atom 2 11.5@117. Noble M400 1.7@120. Superformance Brock Coupe 11.9@119.

The track was Buttonwillow, Config 13, 2.7 Miles.

Lap times:
Z06: 2:01.00 (on true street tires (OEM F1 Supercars))
Exige S: 2:04.3 (on R's (Advan A048's))
GT3: 2:01.50 (on R's (Pilot Sport Cup's))
Atom 2: 1:58.30 (on R's (Advan A048's))
Noble M400: 2:00.40 (on R's (Pzero Corsa's))
Superformance Brock Coupe: 2:02.70 (on R's (Ecsta v710's))

I didn't know the shocks were revised for 07. I wonder if the QA1 shocks would still be the way to go for the 06 Z06 or would the 07 shocks be the better choice? Hmm, might leave that debate for another thread.

Thanks for the numbers brutha..

"Even the 06 Viper runs similar laptimes to the Z06"

What is this supposed to mean?

Put R-compound tires on the Z06 if you are going to run a test like this. Or maybe we can hope GM would start to make this an option.

Don't need to when it can win without them..

But ya, I am with ya, racing tires on the Z06 would be SWEET!! This car proves itself over and over again how bad *** it really is even with its crappy stock tires!!..

"true street tires" meaning the oem run-flats?

That is fantastic. I know the P car guys will say wait for the GT2 but my question is how much money do you have to give those guys in Stuttgart in order to get a faster car? Its starting to look like the answer is 440K for a CGT.

Lots of tests I've seen in the various rags place the GT, Viper, and Z06 laptimes pretty close to one another. The Z06's clear dominance over the Viper is in a straight line.

One personal anecdote of mine... When Lou Gigliotti picked up his '06 Z06, he took it to Motorsport Ranch and did a test day, on stock tires.. I watched, and looked at the timing sheets. His best lap was a a 1:23... (later on he put headers and better brakes on the thing and got into the 22's IIRC, but the 23 is indicative of the stock Z06 driven by LG).

I hadn't been to MSR since ~2004. I bought my Viper on October 2006, and finally got my butt up to MSR with the Viper in November. Did just two sessions out there, as RFC2's guest. I was a little rusty my first session... and nailed a best lap of 1:24 in the second session. One second off of Lou's time in the stock C6 Z06. And I hadn't been there in about two years, and I'd venture to say Lou may be slightly faster than me in an equal car at MSR...

The Viper is slower in a straightline, by ~3mph in the quarter. It made up the time on the track with handling and braking.

Yep. It's quite the accomplishment that the Z06 did so well with the Goodyear F1's. And that it beat the GT3's R-compound-equipped laptime, on the same track and on the same day.

Yes.

Runflats aren't a bad thing. Sidewall stiffness helps steering response. The compound is the problem, it's not as soft as the R rubber.....

LMAO........sure glad I bought an "original" 06 with a good, non-foamed, original roof. I feel sorry for all those who waited.

Default + 50 lbs.???

I am surprised by the mention of the revised shocks as well. I have never seen that brought up before. However, I am even more surprised by the claimed weight. I wonder where it all came from???

I didn't see the term "upgraded" used by Andi. I believe it was "revised."

I guess the only reason for wondering is that a lot of car rags and owners have complained about the "stiff ride" in the original 06 cars. Revised could mean softer. That wouldn't be a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
