This has been discussed many, many,....many times. The FAQ sticky also talks about the aluminum frame.
Here's the latest two.

Just got off the phone with Caravaggio. They already have a few jobs lined up.
Prices:
$6500.00 for the targa top.
16,500.00 for the convertible.
It can and will be done.

I'll take a targa.
GM should offer a targa as a no cost option for the ZO6 or the LS7 as a cost engine option for the coupe and vert.
Maybe that Hill is leaving,
we will get an open top ZO6.
It's about time!!!!

It'll happen about the same time that they come out with a convertible Viper GTS and a convertible Ferrari Challenge Stradale.

This is what I've said for a few months - do *nothing* to the Z06, but offer the LS7 (and appropriate tranny upgrades) in the "base" cars. Maybe even a wet version to mitigate costs a bit.
The Z would still be the "big dog" for overall performance since it would have better weight, bigger rubber, much better brake, upgraded suspension, etc. (Heck, even a slightly detuned variant so as not to dilute the exclusivity of the Z06).
I really think there are a huge number of people who buy (or want to buy) Z's because it represents the "fastest" model, and _not_ because of its track capability. I've talked to dozens of Z owners at cruise-ins, shows, just friendly parking lot chats who have never had their car on track. Not to mention the fairly low number of them I see at various DE's (at least in the S.E. area of the US), relative to the number of cars produced. I imagine with the cost of the new Z and its "compromise" just to get the LS7, there might be a new market?
I guess the bottom line would be the business case: is there a market being lost to potential buyers who want a targa/vert with the high(er) output motor? What are those sales worth to the cost offset of re-engineering the production process to accomodate it?

There're no differences between SRT-10 coupe or convertible except the roof itself, so there
