Question, I've seen mechanics pull the dipstick halfway out and loosen the oil cap on top of the engine BEFORE draining...is that required or just a technique?
Do this test.....take a full 2 liter bottle and turn upside down. Time how long it takes to drain. Refill. Turn it upside down and punch a hole in the "top" (actually the bottom because it is upside down), and time.

This is the thinking of the mechanics (I'm not convinced it would really do anything), but they are there to get you in and out. You really should let it sit for several minutes. Quick Lubes don't let them sit for enough time to really drain all the oil

The service guy at my friendly local chevy dealership lead me to believe something was different about changing oil in a 'vette - that there was more to it than usual. I was like, WTF, but let them do their thing anyway. What did they do? Anybody know? I paid some extra for all the maintenence stuff, so I don't have to pay for individual oil changes so I doubt they told me that for business.

I agree.. there is nothing special about the oil change.. same type of change you would do a 69 vette.. Only thing special is the requirement of Mobil1.. thats all.

If you have all the tools.. The oil and filter cost about 25 bux.

The dealer probably would have charged you another $25 to reset the % oil life left message on the DIC.

HAHA no doubt about that. My dealer offered me my first oil change for free.. i traded them that for some All weather black rubber C6 floor mats.. fair trade in my opinion

All that was available locally w/o ordering something.. I change my oil every 2000-3000 miles so particle buildup isnt really a problem for me. I run enough road courses and autox to require that frequent an oil change. If i was going to run 6000+ id go with a fram. I also get my oil checked every 10k miles by Blackstone labs to see if i have any kind of buildup that shouldnt be in there. I suggest everyone do the same

2000 - 3000 mile oil changes is really a waste of good oil and not cheap insurance for anything. I guarantee if you just followed the DIC oil system monitor your Blackstone labs test would show things were just fine. GM spent a lot of time in designing this system and it is one of the few things that actually work right. If you must change something then change out the oil filter every 2-3k miles.

But since you race your car I guess early oil changes are a good thing.

Ohh absolutely.. every 2000-3000 is a waste for your every day person.. i drive about 30 events a year, usually 2-3 day events.. so with that much time under that kinda pressure i think 2k-3k miles keeps it safe

I noticed your ramps look the same as the ones I just bought, the Rhino Ramp 12000 pound model. Are you able to drive straight up on those without dragging? The first time I tried I had to add some boards to get it on the ramps and it still hit some. Nice post BTW

Thanks for the awesome post! I've never changed the oil myself on any car I've owned but I would like to start with the C6 and this is exactly what I was looking for.
