"Honda couldn't do it with the NSX, which to everybody was the equal of a Ferrari--it was lighter, faster and it would handle better. But people in 1991 were saying, "I don't want to pay $80,000 for a Honda." Even the people at Toyota knew the Toyota name had a certain badge limitation, so they wisely called their upmarket car the Lexus, and the Nissan folks called theirs Infiniti."

...and when was NSX ever "lighter and faster than Ferrari"? What Ferrari? The knock on NSX has always been since its inception to the present that it is heavy and underpowered.
Ferraris could always blow the doors off NSX. Jay mentions 1991... In 1991 NSX 0-60 time was a terrible (for a pricey sports car) 5.5...
Ferrari in 1991 (F40) 0-60 was 3.8 secs!

I simply cannot believe that Leno could author such wayward statements.

Jay is #1 Hollywood guy who still has his feet on the ground! Jay also owns a C5 Corvette. When Johnny Carson was doing the Tonite Show, he got a new Vette every year.

It doesn't matter what the NSX was branded as, Acura or Honda. Everyone who knows anything about cars knows it's a Honda.
Jay's premise was that no one would pay $80K for a Honda.
The solution, he assessed and agreed with, was to rename the car another "upmarket" brand, like Toyota did with Lexus and Nissan did with Infiniti.
This is exactly what Honda had done, thus his statement is misaligned.
'Everyone who knows anything about cars knows' that Lexus is a Toyota and Infiniti is a Nissan.

What about this quote
The Japanese are getting there now with the 240Z and Mazda Cosmo (the RX-8 is its direct descendant), but that heritage isn't as strong yet.
Doesnt Ford own Mazda?
Also Nissan was Datsun at one time but I forget how that came about
There was never a Nissan 240z before .It was a Datsun

To RonnieSVT:
Yes, I caught that too.
Like I said, I'm really surprised. Its as if someone else wrote words deemed as his...
But right now the C6 faithful is so giddy over Leno being seen in a C6 that they cannot get past the high it gives them. Like catnip to cats. Jay is a collector - it is natural that he would have at least one of every generation of Corvette. C6 is a great car. It may get Car of the Year, or be a close second to Mustang (for sales and "value"), but it appears for many, Jay Leno having the same car they do is an orgasmic experience.
I will have a Corvette because I prefer one. Not because Jay has one, too. I'm a MB roadster guy and will have enough effort spent in defending my decision to go with Corvette (when my circles feel that nothing less than an SL55 fits me); thus mentioning that Jay has one won't score me any real points in the matter. (I have a full list of rehearsed responses for my C6 descision.)
Best...

BTW - 240s originally were Nissan Fairlady Zs in Japan. I was living there in my Jr High years, and all the GIs who could scrape up $4K were buying them. This was prior to the "Datsun" 240z intro in the states. Datsun was the US arm of Nissan, until the rebadged it in the early 90s or late 80s (can't remember which). And Acuras are still Hondas.
