Default C6 - Awesome Car Indeed

After selling my 2000 C5 last year in anticipation of the C6, I decided just last month to forego the vette and purchase a Porsche 996 911 GT3. The C5 and C6 are awesome automobiles and I will miss having something in common with the members of this forum. Though, I guess, we still share a love for fine performance automobiles that have a tradition and faithful following...I am still and will continue to be an active member of the corvetteforum and enjoy reading what you great car lovers have to say about one of the most awesome technological advanced high-performance cars on the road today and over the past 50+ years.

Enjoy your C6's -

GM

P.S. I still have an open bay in my garage...and the GM dealer is right down the road...!!!

Nice car. When you get your C6 tell us how it compares to the GT3.

You'll be back. What's the GT3 like compared to your C5? What is it like in general and to drive? Likes and dislikes?

Default Be Careful What you Smoke

You got to be kidding! A base Porsche 996 911 GT3 cost around $100,000, twice that of a base corvette C6, it is a very ugly car, and its performance and horse power is no better then the C6. Overall, if you count all categories such as braking, gas mileage, horse power, etc., it doesn't measure up to the C6. I don't know if you remember the old 1980 Vega that competed with the Ford Pinto. But 966 looks to me like a Vega with fins. If a person gets a used one, they better get on their knees and pray that they don't have to pay the outrageous parts and labor to repair it. Besides a used car whatever it's name is still just a used car not a brand new C6.

Year 2004 Porsche Base Price $100,000
Model 996 911 GT3
Displacement 3600 cu in
Power 380 bhp
Torque 285 ft lbs
Top Speed 185 mph
0 - 60 mph 4.5
0 - 100 mph 9.6

Congratulations on your porsche 911 GT3..

Its an awesome car and I have also considered getting one.

Looking foward to your honest appraisal for the comparision to the C5 you used to own..(when you get a chance)

The C6 Z06 would be a better choice if you can wait it out. It might even surprise you with its performance over the Porsche you presently own.

SouthFlorida, I don't understand your post. The person that started this thread did not try and compare the C6 and the Porsche. He did not bad mouth vettes in fact he called the C5 and C6 "awesome". He sounds like a car enthusiast that decided to try something other then a vette. Why do you feel the need to bash him and his car?

The GT3 is a better overall performer than the C6, and it should be for $50k more. 0-60 is not 4.5, more like 4.2 or 4.0. It is basically a stripped down street legal race car. These cars are in two different categories in my book. Each has it's strong points. Both great machines.

Exactly. Very well said. SouthFlorida sounds like a young punk who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

Default C6 and New Yorkers

CUREVESMAN great reply to GREENMACHINE-I assume you have C6 on order. Where are the New Yorkers on this forum. I guess they are broke after all the taxes we have to pay. My C6 coming 5or6 weeks!

Al (Wantagh L.I. N.Y.)

Jim91Vert - thank you. I am not bashing anything.

My GT3 has 490 miles on it. Break in period is recommended for 1000 miles. Until then, it is advised to keep under 4200 rpms. Red line is at 8200 rpm, so until I get to 1000 miles, it is a tease to drive. Car is claimed to be a street legal GT race car. Porsche limits production of the GT3 to just 2000 units, only 750 of which are imported to North America. That 2000 production figure allows the car to be raced in the GT "Production" category. I hesitate in providing my subjective input in that it is just that - subjective. I don't want to get bashed and turn this into a GT3 vs. Vette thread. I did not buy the GT3 based on the "most bang for buck" mind set. I will never race with the car, I will never go 190 mph in the car, and it is not really important to me what the dynamometer reads...I have always wanted to own a Porsche and Corvette ever since I first became interested in cars. I have now fulfilled a childhood dream.

If the majority of those that are interested in my input won't turn this into a GT3 vs. Vette thread, I will enjoy providing my (totally 100%) subjective thoughts.

GM.

I accidently thought the guy that said he bought the GT3 was the same guy that was cutting on the C6 really bad in another thread and that was the only reason I said anything all. I backed up in time on the threads and saw it was someone else.

But you might want to do further research before calling people punks. I pasted those stats straight from the website of the GT3 and I saw no indication that its overall performance stats were better then the C6. 4.2 or 4.0 is fiction. The C6 is a better car hands down when everything is taken into consideration: braking, gas mileage, horse power, ride, handling, appearance, and price. And the GT3 is not in a league of its own (someone said that as well) because it has been out done by an American Sports Car called a Chevy Corvette.

But I'm open minded. There are a lot of good sports cars out there and I know this. If the 100K GT3 was better then the C6 I would be the first to admit it. But the facts simply are not there to support this. The reality is that it is just another over priced German Sports Car. The C6 is simply more bang for the buck hands down and if money doesn't matter at all to this person, I can list some cars if he has 250K to spend that will run circles around the C6. But it won't be the GT3.

Do you have something against young people? That type of comment seems to pop up in your posts a lot.

SouthFlorida -

What started out to be a complimentary posting on my part, turned into a less-than positive posting(s) by you. Why? Clearly you are the authoritative source and I must have been foolish for purchasing my 2004 996 911 Porsche GT3.

OBTW - Sometimes Porsche reports on their 0-100 kilometers per hour times which equates to 0-62 mph. Not a big difference, but neither is 0.1 - 0.2 seconds. We can do the car magazine numbers dance if you would like, but we all know they can vary greatly from magazine to magazine. For example, I have a Motor Trend Mag, dated June 04 - GT3 tested in 4/04 = 0-60 3.9 sec, 1/4 mile 12.1 @116mph...I don't care. Again, I don't want to do the data-dance w/ you. You like your car and I like mine. Why must everything come down to a "bang for the buck" contest?
