Just read a trade rag on some new technology and the OLED displays were discussed. It seems that there is some question as to how long it will be before the displays can be used in mainstrean devices since the underlying chemical composition that enable the technology is unstable. Apparently the upper limit on the lifespan is 8,000hrs. While this might seem like its not too bad it gets worse. In a B&W display the life is reduced by about 90% - that equates to about 800hrs!! If you figure about 1hr of drive time a day as an average then the DIC might only last about 2.25 years if you use it all the time. If you have it turned on only 50% of the time then you get 4.5 years. I guess you will either want to have it on alll the time and burn it out just under warranty or use it very sparingly. I don't think the move to OLED was well thought out - OR WAS IT??? :skep:

Look at the DIC it is white not green - I think you are thinking of the heads up display that is sort of blue-green.

GM does not make money on service. Just parts. If the parts fail within the warranty period, they lose money. If the parts break too soon, they lose face, which is worse.

Having spent a considerable amount of my career dealing with many of the large semicondutor firms in the U.S., I can tell you honestly that many trade magazines are often very late in their information. This information may be true now, I hope not, or it may have been true at some point in the past, but unfortunately it is difficult to know just by reading the articles.

I know for a fact that the HUD is directly in contact with the CIA but that's only when it's on.
