I think either your spell-checker is busted...or the "no child left behind" strategy came on board a little late to save you.

as far as I can tell the program about breaks even, it's not a source of profit for the company.
Garbage. The program as you call it does make money for them. Besides the claim of such in "All Corvettes Are Red" look at all the overtime they schedule for the Ky plant. Now the Camaro was a different story, unfortunately. :chevy

Corvette won't ever run with teh big dogs; it IS one of teh big dogs.
The big dogs cost over eighty grand, most over a buck twenty. Corvette don't get the respect the big dogs do -- though it should.
C4 sales were in teh crap hole at teh end of their production (which was long) and they had a pretty big upgrade in '91 with a new body, interior, and wheels. Then they got a new engine with almost 100 more horses in '92. Still, sales declined. Teh market just wanted a new 'vette.
The market was nearly dead. Everybody else left when sales evaporated, remember?
The other cars will get so ridiculous with their performance that they will price themselves out of teh market at teh same time.
The big dogs are insensitive to price. Corvette doesn't have that luxury.

Re: CORVETTE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS??????? (vettespd20)
Well, it is a business decision , but as long as there are sufficient buyers Corvette will be around. However, I don't know about sufficient buyers. It's a great car but the average age of a Corvette owner now is 49. Most kids don't drool over them as much as they do the ricers. So the question is, when they grow up and can afford the Vette, will they buy Chevy or 350Z? It's interesting too, that when other manufacturers build some car to com-pete with the Vette and it always costs more (e.g. Viper. Ford GT). I say we enjoy it while it lasts and in our lifetimes keep on buyin' 'em.

Re: CORVETTE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS??????? (mike85mph)
Funny you'd mention a 350Z. I drove one a month ago before making my final decision to buy the vette. Could be a fun car, but nothing beats low-rpm torque and a sound to go with it, neither of which the Z had IMO. I also found the Z ride to be much harsher than the C5. OK, so there's a small ($15k) price difference. I still think the Japanese just don't seem to get it (no bias here).
Look at Harleys... ricers all over that can out-perform a Harley, but I'd bet the Japanese cycle mfgrs would give anything to command profit margin and cult-like following that Harley has. Read recently how Harley pays very close attention to the 'feel' of the bike at all of the interface points (seat, handgrips, footrests).
I suppose it comes down to the soul of the machine... vette seems to have at least part of that formula well understood.

The sole purpose of the Corvette is to create excitement and draw potential customers to the showrooms, whether it be to buy a GEO or a truck,a marketing strategy developed long ago :yesnod: As long as there are showrooms, there will be Corvettes

I sure hope that the C6 is everything that we want, but GM just dealt a blow to the C5. You can now buy a Caddy CTS-V with the LS-6 motor and the 6-speed (Car and Driver, Sept.). Under 50 grand ($27,000 less than the new Z06 Coupe, so you can buy this car and a real nice mid-year for farting around), 13.1 quarters with the kids in the back. While this might sap some C5 sales, I hope it means that the C6 gets a BIG power boost to remain the performance dog of the General.
Or it could mean that GM found a way to screw up the Corvette (remember when you thought that nobody could screw up The Indy 500?)
Daffy
