Default What should the default transmission be?

What should GM put in the C6 as the default transmission? I know the differences in price would come into play, as well as the specifics of the transmissions themselves, but in a general sense what would you prefer to see?

Stick, in my mind a Corvette needs to have a stick shift :yesnod: If you can't drive a stick, you don't need a Vette *flame suit on*

I think the "standard" tranny should be a 6 speed stick. Pay something extra for a 5 or 6 speed auto. I was surprised when I found out the auto was standard on a C5 and that the 6 speed was an option.

although I'll never own a manual shift vehicle again; a sports car should come standard with one.

... should be???

I think it's quite likely that it will be a 6L60E automatic.

Paying a premium for a manual transmission on a sportscar is somewhat stupid, IMO. Just like almost every other car, and especially a Corvette, if you want the "upgrade" of an automatic tranny, then you pay for it. With that being said, I know I'll be paying extra for a feature I think should be standard on the C6. :banghead:

I'm asking for your opinion as to what you think GM SHOULD do, not what they WILL do.

It should be the manual. But if they do that, then the automatic option will carry a price decrease, but the base price for comparison purposes with other cars will be higher.

Thanks for the input, guys. Until now, I wasn't aware of exactly why the manual cost me more than an automatic. Especially considering the manual is the less expensive option in most cars. I still feel they should make it the default just b/c it promotes the sporting nature of the car...but I think the bean counters might not be too quick to agree. :(

on a really good sports car I can certainly see the manual costing more, because really good manuals are expensive. on a hundai you can get by with a vanilla manual, but on a corvette the quality of the manual is something that has a lot more focus because it is a premium sports car.

The general population of this site would prefer manuals, but these days the general public want autos as default trannies. That's where my vote went. The manual tranny has long been an option on Corvettes, and the auto has been default. Not gonna change, more than likely. :steering:

I voted for the Tiptronic-style, although I expect it will be an option due to the higher cost. Still, it SHOULD be default, as that's what most exoticars are going to, and that's what the Vette should aspire towards.
If it's good enough for Formula 1 drivers, it's good enough for me. ;) I think the days of rowing gears manually are, blessedly, soon to be over. There's no advantage I can think of for a clutch and stick over tiptronic, unless you count push-starting the vehicle.

If gM wants to make more $$ on the C6, then they will make standard the transmission
(manual or auto), that the least amount of C5 were ordered with. So if most people
wanted an auto with the C5, its a safe bet they will again for the C6 so might as
well make the manual standard. Of course this assumes they ordered the auto on the
C5 becuuse $900 for a stick was too much or they wanted to put the $900 into
some other option.

Well, let's see... They sell about 70% automatics. Why don't they make the manual standard and charge a few hundred for the upgrade to an automatic? They would make more money charging an increase for 70% of the sales than they do for 30%... and ammortized over the total sales it could be somewhat less per car. HMMMMMMMMM

The transmissions have already been set. They are a 6 speed manual and
a 6 speed automatic. It has been published in several major publications.

OK hotshot :) ... we'll have to see if it really is true or not. I've got quite a few older "major publications" that were giving bad info leading right up to the C5's official introduction. Don't believe everything you read.

Beyond just taking that with a grain of salt, that doesn't answer my question at all as to WHAT tranny should be default.
