Welp, this can't be good! (Metal in oil pan)
Doing an oil change on my '07 LS2 with 25K miles on the clock, and I see this peeking out at me from inside the pan. Does that look like a bearing fragment?...kinda does to me. And if it was, would the car be running OK? The car has been running fine, as far as I can tell. I think I know what the answer will be here, but should I be getting this thing towed to a shop to have to pan dropped (not something I care to do myself) to see what's up?
The drain plug is magnetic (put in by the previous owner, I guess)...wonder if that's been keeping that chunk at the bottom of the pan.
How effed am I going to be here?...should I just start drinking now?
Thanks...I think.

I should add I've not noticed any issues with oil pressure as indicated in the DIC. I'm about 18 miles away from Twenty First Century in Addison, TX...guess I should suck it up and pay for the tow rather than baby it there?

It's possible that it's a piece of a foil seal from a jug of engine oil.

yeah, definitely not a jug seal, and definitely not coming out with needle nose pliers.
Guess I might as well slap a new M1-113A filter on it, fill 'er full of oil...and full send! Pardon me while I make myself an Old Fashioned and ponder my life choices.

This is still an option. If the car seems to be running well now, it could be an opportunity to figure out what broke and get it fixed before further damage is done. Spend a little money now to potentially save a lot later.

Look at the bright side, if it is bearing material, engine has to come out of the cradle, MAYBE all it needs are new bearings. Maybe. BUT!!! Also the perfect time to add a cam and a little head work to get a solid 50+ HP! Keep us posted, hoping for the best

Yes, with only 25k miles I would have it towed to 21st century in Addison for their opinion unless you can remove the object.

Yeah, think that's what I'm gonna do. I don't have a borescope, don't want to buy a cheap HF version, and could use the $$ for a decent one on the tow to 21st Century.
Knowing my luck, I'd have this issue sorted and then the fuel tank/sender issue would crop up, or I'd need a new clutch.
Nothing left to do now but complete the oil change (I'll have to start the engine to get it off the ramps and back into the garage), then clean up, get drunk and watch the AFC Championship game.
Thank you all for your input! The weather here in DFW is supposed to be shitty this week, so I doubt I get anywhere with this anytime soon. But, I'll post updates as I have them.

After way too much hand wringing, and my eventual recognition that hand wringing and worry gets me no where, I spun on a new filter, filled her full of synthetic liquid gold, and hit the fun button. She fired up and sounded alright (video attached…unfortunately had to cut it way down to upload). Don’t hear any knocking…
I’ll have to wait for a winter storm to pass this week, but I’ll get her towed to 21st, swallow hard, and fix what needs to be fixed! Luckily, I have a supportive wife!

There are many engine guru’s on the forum that should have a good idea what mystery piece is, or isn’t If you don’t hear from them soon, try reposting with a different title.

That’s a helicoil right? My guess is that you didn’t install it and that the installer caused the odd piece to be there. If I’m right, you could keep driving it but you will know better when you have the pan removed.

Did you attempt to get the piece out with some slim needle nose pliers, or is the piece to large? Doesn't look like a piece of a bearing, but who knows. I agree......dropping the pan is the way to go just for the sake of prevention. Please let us with a great deal of curiosity know what you find out. Thanks.....and good luck....
