Default rear hatch stuck

i cant get the rear hatch open. would like to put the hard top back on the car. with the top in the back i cant reach around it to pull any thing take apart anything or figure out anything. i have already taken out tail light. fob dosnt work neither does back button or switch by steering wheel. even the key no go it seems my only option is the Chevy dealer @ $250.00 an hour

i would disconnect the battery while trying the key approach.

pull both neg / pos cables off and touch them together. It is cheaper than 250 an hour

Why do you touch the two cables together? Thanks.

The idea is to drain residual voltage from the various modules so that when you reconnect, everything reboots. Touching the cables probably hastens the drain, but leaving the cables disconnected for 10 minutes should do it as well.

It's possible you are simply not turning the key far enough. It needs to turn 90*. Since in this case you are trying to mechanically open the latch, there's quite a bit of resistance. It also helps if you push down on the hatch to lessen the upward force of the striker against the latch. Push down hard, turn key 90^, and then allow the hatch to pop up. The hatch key and lock assumes complete loss of power, so it should work regardless of anything to do with the battery or electronic gremlins. Unless of course the cable from the latch to the lock is not connected. If so, good luck....

Also, there's got to be a fuse for the latch circuit. Problem is, I can't see anything on the fuse block labelled 'latch', just 'trunk. There are two labelled trunk, but the one in the lower part of the panel I think is for verts. The one under a separate cover on the right might be for coupes. Fuse panel is in passenger footwell.

I have also read recently that a license plate frame was preventing the key from turning all the way. In case you happen to have a frame.

Default Hatch stuck.

That was me on the key not turning all the way because of the license plate frame. Key would turn but was not going all the way in so it wouldn't turn fully. Are you hearing anything when you press the fobs or button and switch? If not you must have an electrical gremlin or a loose wire.
good luck

Mine will open if I push the fob or dash button several times. When closing, it takes several tried, then it does not pull down completely. I have to then push down hard to make the rear interior lights go out. I do not know if it needs the new latch mechanism or what.

Default Hatch issue

This sounds like a mechanical issue with the latching assembly itself. Not too difficult to replace. 3 bolts. I don't know if it has any adjustment ability or not. Based on your description it seems like the latch is out of adjustment.

I had the same problem. Get a can of dry Teflon spray. Spray on the lock and after some wiggling, it will work perfectly and effortlessly. DO NOT GET THE SPRAY ON ANYTHING EXCEPT THE LOCK. The stuff is so slick that you can't remove it from the slightest rough surface and it is white so it is easily seen.

Check to see if anything is caught in the latch itself. I had this happen once and once we pulled the rag from the latch never had the problem again and also always made sure nothing would ever get caught there.

Looks like we may never hear back from the OP, but if he can’t get the hatch open, I’m not sure how he can get to the latch mechanism with the top stowed in there. A rag or something similar jammed in the latch could have happened, but how do you get it open if so? Maybe the OP can update us on the situation.

IM making progress. I got the hatch open, got the hardtop out, and unscrewed the latch but I still cant get it to let loose. I have pulled some stuff out of the latch area, hard plastic pieces, and i keep hitting the buttons, it makes the sound and motion, but will not release.

Now we're on the edge of our seats. HOW DID YOU GET IT OPEN?

I crawled in there on my back with a stubby screwdriver, and unscrewed the latch from the hatch. then pushed the hatch up. Now I am going to replace the whole mechanism or actuator " I actually think it is called an actuator" since it wasn't actuating. I went to the Chevy Dealer and asked them what they would do, and had them try to open it.

with your idea of something jammed in there, got me looking a little different into the situation. Thank you. I did find broken plastic pieces in the jam, from previous owner. I bought the car with the problem, actually quite a few problems, very bad car buying experience. No honesty from Auto Connection in Fairfield.
