Locked fob in & was able to unlock hatch with fob inside???

This method can be tucked half way in my front pocket. Used it for 10 years and haven’t locked a FOB in my car, yet...It unsnaps off easier than on bulky belt loops and Stainless Key Rings can survive a zillion wash and dry cycles.

If only one fob is present, the car will check again to see if the fob is present before actually locking, which is time based not distance as some think.
If it saw your fob on DS door closure, it should see it upon checking and NOT lock.
If two fobs are present and one leaves, it will autolock unless you tell it not to by pressing the unlock button until it beeps.

I found this forum thread today. It happened to me today. I’ve had my ‘12 GS for several months and today, I opened the rear hatch, tossed my gym bag into the hatch area, walked around to the driver’s side door and it would not unlock to open. I put my hand in my pocket and realized my key fob was in my gym bag.
So the car didn’t give me squat of help. Why would it lock if the hatch antenna detects a fob inside the hatch area? Stupid design.
I’ll get a spare key cut and hideakey on the chassis somewhere for next time, to get me back in.

I did something stupid. I was upgrading the head unit and had the battery disconnected. Closed the door and realized the hood and hatch were both closed both windows were all the way up. Right after I closed the door, I thought I was Fu@##%^&. Then remembered the key in Fob and opened the hatch. I keep the extra fob in a place where I can get to it quickly. The OP was very lucky

It’s not going to happen to me, no way!

It just surprised me that the alarm would go off if a correct key was being used - the key's purpose is to allow the user to get into the car if the key fob battery is dead, or the car's battery is dead.
In a lock out situation, I understand what to do, use the spare key, get in, retrieve the locked-in fob, hit the unlock button to disarm the honking alarm system.
If my key fob battery is dead and I used a mechanical key to get inside, how does one turn off the alarm?

Hey thanks HK770
Good to know what blank to use. I went to HD yesterday and they used their fancy computer key machines and told me they didn' have a blank that matched.

If the fob battery is dead and popping the hatch with the key triggers the alarm, then my best guess is that putting the fob in the glovebox slot might silence the alarm. That’s the only move you’ve got other than disconnecting the car battery. Strange too because it seems to me that when I’ve been out in the garage without a fob and I wanted into the hatch, I just used the cut key I carry in my wallet. Don’t recall the alarm ever going off.

Have a hideout key on car, another tie wrapped inside my wallet. And the wife has one in her purse. as well as the one on bedroom wall.
But key gets you in car, the fob works in slot without fob battery. Yes there is a fob secreted in or on car!
Hard to retrieve but if you know where to look it's there. I also added these to charge battery/with or without being able to get inside.

Just need one skinny spare key, no fob, so when I throw my gym bag with wallet, phone, fob in the hatch and shut it, I don't have the "oh sh&t" moment. I got lucky once, but not counting on twice. Got the key cut today, works, now need a hidey place. Prefer to not need tools to access. I know this is hard. Maybe wedge it behind the rear plate & then can pry part of the plate away with hands if needed. Ideas????

Duct tape spare key to rear facia under license plate, out of sight but easily accessible...
