Default Things that concern me about my C6 purchase

I purchased a 2010 C6 with 25k miles. I've been noticing a lot of things that don't seem right for a car with that few of miles. Maybe someone can tell me if these are common.
1) When I first start it up in the morning there is a rattle under the hood that sounds like a lifter or possibly a pulley. The noise stops after about 60 seconds.
2) I see small amounts of steam coming out of the exhaust even in 70 degree weather. Is that normal after the engine has been running for 5 minutes?
3) engine runs rough at idle
4) When driving the steering wheel seems easier to turn left than right. I'm wondering if that's normal or if I might have a problem?
5) When I release the brake pedal to step on the gas it sounds like the pedal is hitting something metal at the end of its upward travel. Is that normal or does it sound like a rubber bushing has failed?

Thanks

I have an '05 C6 55K miles. I don't have a clue if you have a problem but here are my thoughts: (Also don't forget your car is 11 years old, mine is 16)

1) I have a very light rotating noise at startup - I think it's a cold serpentine belt.
2) Depends on the dew point but yes - if it is indeed steam (white).
3) Mine runs a bit rough at idle, I can't tell if it just the way it is supposed to be or not. I would not worry about it.
4) That might be a problem - check tire wear for alignment issues, Make sure you're not checking on a "crowned" road etc.
5) Mine is dead quiet. Look at the pedal stop under the dash and see. Do you slide your foot off the pedal and let it snap up maybe?

Hope these ideas are of some help.

Mark, your car sounds like toast. I'll take it off your hands, and pay for shipping.

Seriously I can't speak on all of them, but agree with Dutch on #2 and #3. I think it's actually normal, and I've been just spoiled having driven Lexus and Mercedes cars for such a long time prior to picking up my 09 in March.

Running rough could be a plug wire at both ends

5. normal
brake pedal makes a clicking from the brake light relay.
It's a small metal looking box in fuse area under carpet in passenger foot well.
I wrapped mine in electrician's tape and it muffled the click.

Pre Purchase inspection would have been nice.

The rough idle if it’s like an occasional stumble is probably due to the low idle speed (500rpm). Normal.

My 2010 M6 has 45000 miles on it and has none of the issues you cited. My car has been extremely reliable. All I have replaced are the battery and tires. I'd have the car checked out by a mechanic you trust. Good luck.

Coming from a former owner of E and ML Class MB’s I have to question your “spoiled by” statement.

The catalytic converters convert some of the gases to water and the water boils in the exhaust hence the steam and dripping water, how long have we had cats on cars? 40 years?

#4 and #5 I would have checked out.
#3. I had the same issue. I replaced the the original air filter and runs much smoother. turned 49000 miles. But if your car is 11 years old and the owners manual says replace at 50000 miles I would still change it. Made a big difference.

As for the rough idle, you should check your throttle body intake. Get some throttle body cleaner, a dry washcloth, and polish the butterfly valve and interior of the housing. Any buildup of crud where the valve meters against the intake can impact the valve’s ability to regulate low idle. Solved my slight surging idle issue 2 weeks ago....

1. look under the hood when the engine is running....look at the harmonic balancer near the bottom of the engine...is it wobbling while turning? C6 cars are noted for this issue & a replacement will be needed if it is

5) Mine has done that since I got it. (2005)..

I tested it, by purposely sliding my foot off, to move from the brake to gas pedals, and it "clicks" or "snaps" even with the car off.

If you "lift" your foot straight off the brake it won't do it. @Dutch08 earlier in the thread commented that " Do you slide your foot off the pedal and let it snap up maybe?"

That's it.

Have a friend with a 2010 C6 GS Convertible with 19K miles, he was over the house this past weekend, I have spent a considerable amount of time in his car as a passenger and driver I can say for sure:

1) When I first start it up in the morning there is a rattle under the hood that sounds like a lifter or possibly a pulley. The noise stops after about 60 seconds.
Absolutely no abnormal noises beyond normal engine sounds, car was purchased in 2019 and was checked by a Vette mechanic during a pre-purchase inspection.

2) I see small amounts of steam coming out of the exhaust even in 70 degree weather. Is that normal after the engine has been running for 5 minutes?
Agree with those that say this is normal, my 2013 427 does the same.

3) engine runs rough at idle
Tune up time perhaps, unless you have some freaked out cam, your C6 should sound smoother at idle, in fact my friends LS3 sounds smoother than the LS7 in my car.

4) When driving the steering wheel seems easier to turn left than right. I'm wondering if that's normal or if I might have a problem?
This does not sound good, I would have a major issue with this and would seek assistance from a reputable shop

5) When I release the brake pedal to step on the gas it sounds like the pedal is hitting something metal at the end of its upward travel. Is that normal or does it sound like a rubber bushing has failed?
No sound from either cars so I would again feel this is abnormal.
