Default Definitive Fix to C6 Roof Rattles

My 2008 Coupe has had roof rattles for years. I followed every single thread, every single fix,and sought advice to the eliminating the roof rattle and all to no avail.

I tried the "fix" described" in the attached video. IT WORKS ! 100%

Purchased two sets of O-rings, #31 (9/16" OD and 5/16" ID) and #5 (3/8" OD and 1/4" ID). #31 replace the current O-rings on the roof guide posts (see video), and then added the #5 O-rings onto the posts as well (again see video).

Before fix: rattle, rattle, rattle. After fix: silence, silence, silence.

No exaggeration. You will be shocked.

I disagree. Nothing and I mean NOTHING permanently stops roof noise forever, especially if you take off your roof occasionally. I've done o-rings, e-clips, latch tightening, and lubrication. Nothing lasts.

I bet it will do pretty well if you replace said O-rings that the OP listed periodically.

Seems worth a try.
Yes, could become a maintenance item, eg: replace o-rings ever 6 months.
(Or every time you remove the roof LOL.)

First off, I'm happy for you that your method worked. The rattle really detracts from the overall experience. Second, though, my opinion is that the extra O-rings mask an underlying problem which is has to do with play between the front latch and striker plate. I seem to have fixed my rattle, which I isolated to the passenger side latch, by disassembling, cleaning, and lubing the latch friction surface, screw, and striker plate, and then torquing everything back up. IIRC, I did this in May of 2019, and the rattle has not returned since then after many miles, rough roads, and roof removals. I suspect that either the screw had become looser, or was never torqued properly from the factory. It did have some blue Loctite on it, but was easy to remove. I guess the bottom line is that whatever method works, go for it!

Nothing lasts, true. But with e-clips, latch tightening, o-rings you need to use this stuff liberally at least twice per year.

Just passing this along as a courtesy. If you don't want to try it, then don't......

BTW, used Synthetic Lube for years. Nice stuff. Didn't completely solve the problem.

P.S. You can add a little Synthetic Lube or Teflon Lube as well after the O-rings are added/replaced. Just in case.

If you take the roof off then you increase your chances for a rattle. I lube mine up often and it is quiet. There is no permanent fix for it.

I've done the double o-ring method as well...with a little of the GM lube on them. No rattles at all since...it's been 4 months now.

I did the O rings, shrink wrapped the pins and added C clips 6 years ago. Silent ever since and I take my roof off a lot.

I have never greased up the weatherstrip because it just sounds like a mess and in my case, clearly was not needed.

I found all 3 fixes on here years ago and it has been a permanent fix on my car, even with removing my roof about once per week. Not sure if any one or all 3 together did the trick, but until I see a thread like this, I don't even think about my roof as a problem.

I’d rather hear my pipes than the roof rattling.

I ran by Home Depot last night to get the o-rings.

If I get the COVID from all the unmasked folks there but fix the roof rattle it will have been worth it.

If I get the COVID and don't fix the problem I'll come looking for you VETTRAN4 and cough on you.

Saw the video/did the fix - was quiet for a few days, but now minor pops and squeaks are back. The most obnoxious loud pops/bangs are gone. Planning on lubing the pins next, maybe pull the latches/clean/re-install as others have done. The O-rings do work but YMMV.

I put 1 or 2 drops of sewing machine oil on the axles the rollers rotate on, with a bottle that has a needle like a hypo. It usually lasts 20-30 thousand miles (2-3 years) until it dries out.

To be fair, I haven't tried the pin shrink wrap trick yet. I guess I'll give that a whirl.

Here's all I use. Works for me. Recommended to me by Pat G. the camshaft guru.
